These Flounder Fishing Tips Could Be The Best Ever!!!

It’s flounder time (aka fluke, aka summer flounder, aka Doormat).

And we brought on one of the most nation’s foremost flounder experts to reveal his best flounder fishing tips…

John Skinner.

If you haven’t heard of John Skinner, he’s a popular fishing author, a well-known fluke fisherman, and he has one of the most-watched YouTube channels on catching flounder on the Internet.

What makes his flounder videos so great is that he is incredibly scientific when it comes to catching flounder.

He’s not just “guessing” on what’s working when it comes to catching flounder…

Instead, John actually films lures and baits underwater…

Watching hours and hours of footage to discover what is really working down there in the flounder’s habitat (and then publishing his findings for us).

Every fisherman who targets flounder has a lot to thank John for, as he’s certainly shortened up the learning curve for many of us fluke and flounder anglers.

And the really great news is that he agreed to join us on our most recent Fish Strong podcast episode to discuss some of his best flounder tips and techniques (he’s also one of the eight experts we brought on to create the proven Flounder Mastery course here).

Today I fished Delaware’s, Indian River, Inlet and back waters using all of Skinner’s, recommended gear and tactics. A couple fished with me using live minnows. He and his wife out fished my Spro, buck tails, and Tsunami teasers, fifteen fish to one. I started out with the white Spro buck tails in the lightest weight that held bottom. I tried, white, pink and white, orange, and chartreuse Gulp baits, with little success. I brought one short fish to the boat, on the teaser with 4 inch, orange color Gulp, Swimming Mullet. No doubt Skinner, is an intimate authority and master Fluke fisher. The moral to today’s adventure, Gulp does not always out fish all other baits. I should note: that I have been an avid and usually successful, salt and fresh water fisherman for over sixty years.

Not to be negetive but this same article was posted last year and i have noticed a few other repeats as well also I bought John spinners book and although it’s great reading fishing for flounder in the northeast in new York is totally different then fishing for flounder in florida or any where in the south for that matter the northeast is deeper colder and different structure most of the deep flounder fishing that is done here in Florida is around ship wrecks or man made deep underwater structure all I know is the way John Skinner fishes to me sounds crazy going out to sea about 3 to 5 miles out and bouncing a double rig of a bucktail jig tipped with a gulp swimming mullet and on the other line a sole gulp swimming mullet off the bottom in a kayak!!! Kinda crazy very risky as well the tide here in northeast fl is very strong but the north Atlantic where new York is is in sure much stronger and rougher very tough fishing I think I’ll stick to docks and oysters beds around intercoastal shorelines catch plenty of flounder that way works for me????

Steven Free is 100% correct . NE fluke fishing is way way different and MUCH MUCH EASIER than fishing for Fluke in the deep South .

i really liked John Skinner’s video and how he tied his rig an how he worked it when on the water BUT i had to watch many times due to my interest in his boat. that boat proves you do not have to spend a fortune on a boat to catch fish you just have to rig it so it works for you and boy do i like his set up. nice open deck to fish from and gear out of his way then rod holders front and back. add the flat rail around the edge and my only question is the black things on each side near the back.

I don’t fluke fish. I noticed that every fish was caught on the lower hook ( bucktail) . what is the purpose of the lure on the drop loop?

Eugene Lee

Pretty much a teaser to get their attention, though when I fished the beach I’ve had them hit the top lure more then the bucktail.

Great stuff! Is there any of that action taking place in fla or is it all out of state? I’ve fished fla east coast all my life (I’m 60). Caught 1000’s of snook, trout, tarpon etc….but now I want to mainly focus on flounder. Recently moved to tarpon springs and these flounder are stumping me.
I’ll be watching…maybe even join lol
Keep up the good stuff!

Flounder can be caught from the beach in parts of S. Florida. A good friend landed a five pounder, on a pompano rig, with sand flea and Fish Bite baits. In all my years surf fishing, I have never observed an angler targeting fluke in the surf. This is especially true in S. Florida.
