Have you ever wanted to know how much colder a YETI Rambler Colster can keep a beer or soda compared to a cheap foam koozie?
How about the YETI Colster compared to just keeping your cold beverage can “naked” in your hand with no protection at all?
Well wait until you see how the YETI Colster held up while trying to keep a beer cold for almost 100 minutes outside in Florida last week…
Why 99 minutes you ask?
Simply because the stopwatch we have doesn’t go to 100, and it seemed odd to say 99 minutes and 59 seconds…
And I know what you are thinking… if it takes someone 99 minutes to drink a beer, they might want to find a new hobby…
We completely agree.
But we wanted to put this YETI Colster to the test and see just how well it stood up to a naked can and a cheap foam koozie at ALL increments along the 99-minute challenge.
Important Notes:
- The YETI Rambler Colster we used was brand new (never been used) except for the custom paint and dip that our friend and ex-pro baseball player Brandon Claussen made for us. However, the customization should have zero affect on the Colster’s ability to insulate and keep a beer cold.
- Salt Strong was in no way paid, incentivized, or compensated for this review by YETI Coolers or anyone else (like the Busch Light beers we used). This YETI Colster review is completely independent.
Meet The Three Competitors
“In The YETI Colster Challenge”
Contestant #1 – The Naked Beer Can
Pros:
- It’s free to go “naked” with no koozie
- You never have to carry around something with you before and after you are drinking a beer (or cola), and you probably won’t be as likely to “nurse” your beer…
Cons:
- Your beer goes warmer faster
- Your hands could get cold
Contestant #2 – The Foam Koozie
Pros:
- These things are pretty inexpensive so you won’t get mad if you lose one
- They have kept beer (and other cans and bottles) cool for decades
Cons:
- They are too big to fit in your pocket
- Your friends might inquire as to why you are too cheap to buy a Yeti Colster…
Contestant #3 – The YETI Rambler Colster
Pros:
- The YETI Colster is sweat proof, and it supposedly keeps your drinks colder than any other koozie out there (see results in the video below)
- You look cool because you have a YETI product in your hand (or so I’ve been told)
Cons:
- At approximately $30 (click here to see latest price on Amazon), it is tough for many people to spend $30 on a koozie (let alone much more for a custom and personalized YETI Colster like our friend Brandon sent us
- It’s a bit heavy compared to a foam koozie (because it has stainless steel walls), and if you lose this koozie, it isn’t like losing one of the inexpensive foam ones
Materials Used In This YETI Challenge
- Three Busch Light Beers all started precisely at 40 degrees
- Three brand new “Instant Temperature” thermometers (used for getting the temperature of warm or hot liquids and food)
- GoPro
- Digital timer (that maxes at 99 minutes, 59 seconds)
- Brand new Yeti Rambler Colster
- Foam koozie

Results Of The YETI Colster Cold Beer Challenge
Since 99 minutes and 59 seconds is an AWFULLY long time to drink a beer, let’s focus on both the short term and long term effect that the YETI Rambler Colster had over it’s competitors.
For instance, what is more realistic is that if someone was nursing a beer (or fishing heavily in between sips), it could take them a solid 35-40 minutes to get through a beer (I am not speaking for myself here…)
And in this YETI challenge, the three competitors had the following temperatures after sitting outside in approx 85-degree weather for a full 40 minutes:
- Naked Beer: 68 degrees
- Foam Koozie: 57 degrees
- YETI Colster: 48 degrees
At a 20 degree difference compared to a naked beer can, that is a pretty remarkable difference. And even at 9 degrees colder than a foam koozie, that is a much more enjoyable beer while outside in the heat.
Finally, 48 degrees is still what most would consider a cold beer.
Now let’s look at the long-term effects at the full 99 (aka 100) minutes:
- Naked Beer: 78 degrees
- Foam Koozie: 69-70 degrees
- YETI Colster: 58-59 degrees
Still at a 20-degree difference with a naked beer can is a HUGE difference once we talk about drinking a beer that has been sitting outside for 100 minutes.
For instance, I took a sip of the Busch Light at the end of that video that had been sitting in the YETI Colster, and it was drinkable at 58-59 degrees.
Now at 69-70 degrees, although it is just 10 degrees higher that is when beer starts to taste “warm”. In fact, most people would pour a beer out if they came across it at 70 degrees (unless it was a Guinness or some special beer that tasted decent while warm). But for Busch Light, it’s drinkability is done at cold temps.
And at 78 degrees (more than room temperature in my office), I am not getting near that beer no matter how thirsty I am.
Is it worth a $30 difference?
I guess it depends on how much you like cold beer (and how often you enjoy a cold beverage)…
Custom YETI Rambler Colster
Our good friend Brandon Claussen (ex-MLB baseball player) sent us this amazing custom YETI Colster with a Snook and a flats boat after we took Brandon and wounded warrior Scott Lilley out fishing last March (watch wounded warrior Scott Lilley’s amazing fishing trip here).
After chatting with Brandon, he told us that he could make these custom coozies for us, and could get all kinds of different saltwater fish designs (so it could be an image of inshore slam, no boat, boat, etc).
But before we go down the path of investing any more time and money into the project, we want to know if you have any interest in buying one of these Salt Strong custom YETI Colsters.
It would most likely be dipped in either white or black, have the Salt Strong logo on one side, and a specific saltwater game fish (or multiple fish) on the other side.
Click the button below and let us know if you would be interested. This doesn’t lock you to anything, but it would help us out tremendously if you only add in your name if you are truly interested.
Conclusion
I’ll be honest with you, I never dreamed that I would own a $30 Koozie…
And in reality, it was a gift so I never actually had to personally spend the $30.
But now that I own one, have used it, and have put it up to the test, I am a pretty big fan of the YETI Colster… of course, I also pride myself on not “NURSING” my beers, so a Koozie isn’t a fundamental or critical part of my beer drinking ritual…
And while I am certain that part of it is the novelty of “Owning a YETI product”, on the other hand, it is nice to have a super cold beer when I am in “Sipping Mode”.
While I was out on the boat this past weekend for my birthday, I certainly savored my 7-10 degree cooler beer than my brother who forgot his koozie…
So back to the big question…
Is the YETI Colster worth $30?
I guess it all depends how much value you put on a colder beer and how often you will use it…
Hope you enjoyed this challenge. Stay tuned for more…

I believe I saw a gasparilla koozie in the first photo, then a no name in the second?? Then you have the nerve to call it “cheap”? For the record, mine is priceless. Please defend these irresponsible practices in your blogosphere joe! And happy birthday my bearded friend
Hahaha. Well played Adam! And yes, that was the legendary and priceless Gasparilla Island Koozie in the video. The reason for the “generic orange koozie” pic was I couldn’t muster the strength to have a picture of the Gasparilla Koozie next to the word “Cheap Koozie”…
All the best to you and your family brother!
