You might think that a jighead is just a jighead. However, the design of each model is specifically dialed in for different types of fishing. Use the wrong one, and you might end up missing out on the fish you should be catching.
In this video, I’ll go over four popular styles and help you understand the proper time and situation to use them along with what they look like rigged on a lure.
Enjoy!

Key Takeaways
- Round Eye jigheads are best when used for swimming paddle tails through the water. They can work well hopping across the bottom, but the lure tends to fall over during pauses and doesn’t look as natural.
- Football jigheads perform best when bouncing lures on the bottom where there is a low risk of snags like oysters and grass. This jighead allows the lure to stand up without falling over when you pause, giving it a more natural presentation.
- Hoss Helix weedless hooks perform the best for shallow water in the 1 – 4-foot range. It excels at avoiding hang-ups in snags such as oysters, rocks, and grass. It’s the best shallow water option when there’s a lot of structure around.
- Weedless Football jigheads are the best bet in water more than 4 feet deep and up to 100 feet depending on the weight you’re using. It’s the best option for bouncing lures on the bottom when it’s deep and there’s a lot of structure to get snagged on.

Good presentation Pat. I’ve used all of the jig heads, except the weedless football, and have had good success, especially the Hoss Helix weedless. I also like the fact you and the other coaches do the testing for us,saving time and money on lures that are proven to catch fish. Let others do what they may. For me, I like SS and the insider prices. PA POW
In Maryland we have a local guy that makes a great jig head.. From 3/16 oz to 4 oz. multiple colors BIG eyes . He also makes other lures that catch a variety of species. https://www.geyejigs.com/products
Thanks Pat. With so many brands and choices out there you were able to simplify by style and type of fishing. I’ve been using the weedless football jighead almost exclusively and really.like it for so many applications. And the price is right!
Ha caught you you failed to mention the boxing glove style and the skimmer jig and if I thought about it longer probably a few others why is it you only mentioned ones made by and sponsored by saltstrong? Especially when you guys say your not trying to promote them well yes while I do use saltstrong tackle to me there are alot more brands out there that are just as good if not better in fact most of the jigheads I use are NOT saltstrong ones some yes but most for me no because I have fished for many years and have found that just because a company says that they are the best to me is only there opinion which usually results in it not being true it’s a big world out there with tons of competition as well as alot more experience then what a club has that started only a decade ago think about it I have been just inshore fishing saltwater for about 22 years now and overall fishing for 55 years so obviously I have used alot of other brands of tackle since I started now I’m not saying saltstrong tackle isn’t good of coarse not otherwise I wouldn’t own any or fish with it either I just don’t like hearing it’s the best because it definatly is not but that’s what I have experienced and only speak for myself enough said🤔
always the best tips.
