When should you use a pure topwater bait vs a slash bait (diving jerk bait)? The difference is subtle but very important.
In this video, I break down the best times to use the Moonwalker (topwater) VS Skinny Lipper (slash bait), both are some of our most popular lures.
This way you can maximize your strikes and experience the explosive thrill of topwater fishing all day long.

Good Morning, I just watched the video of the moonwalker and skinny lipper. I am ready to try them out and work on my PB. Thanks for the info and Tight Lines!🎣🎣🎣
Glad you like it! Let us know how it goes on that PB!
Continuing this line of thought, when would you switch to a wake bait and why?
Great question Robert. I use the wake bait when the wind is up and it’s choppy. That extra sound helps the fish key in on the lure. If it’s just a little breezy or calm, I’ll use the other two.
Huge fan of the Moonwalker!
I’ve caught some really nice fish on it! It’s a great topwater!
Informative video thanks!
Thanks Daniel!!
Thanks for this info it will help a lot when choosing a lure. You guys are great at giving out tips to help use reach that next level and it’s greatly appreciated.
Appreciate the feedback and kind words Scott! Glad it helped you!
New on this chat
Just tried the SkinnyLippper and it worked amazing- Just ended with not the fish I wanted but- A small Cuda- I did feel other smaller fish trying to hit it
New toy that needs further practice
Glad you had some quick success with it. Keep at it and you’ll get more fish on it.
Well pat I bought every color that saltstrong has in the skinny lipper and the moon walker except for the purple demon color and have yet to catch anything on the skinny lipper had a few follow but no takers but recently I have taken a few of my bomber long A’s and refurbished them by removing the middle treble and replaced the front treble and rear with demon bike hooks and the last time I was out i caught 2 nice trout on them and had a few other good hits as well I actually like it better then the skinny lipper because it has a little bigger lip so it can dive if retrieved fast enough to about 6 ft a depth the skinny lipper is not designed for plus I still can use them shallow like over oyster bars or along side grasslines anyways just saying not saying saltstrong lures donot work just that some don’t seem to work as well for me as others thanks for the info and all you do
Agree here, I have tried both with no success. May just be time of year type of fish or something else, but power prawn, tweakers and glide shrimp seem to work the best. Only the occasional follow with these. I do appreciate the guidance on the best use and have been working them in the early morning to see if I get a different result after the video. I watch most of them, good quality and good training.
Thanks George! One of the biggest mistakes I see people doing with topwater is working them too fast. Try mixing up your retrieves and see if they want a different cadence that day. Often times just a simple slow down might turn them on.
I think there’s a time and place for the Skinny Lipper, they’re at their best when the fish are feeding towards the top of the water. Those Long A’s are a proven fish catcher in both fresh and salt, and if the fish are down lower they can be great.
Appreciate you watching!
Very subtle difference and truly appreciate this valuable info. Great job Pat and thanks.
Glad you found it helpful Jon!
Thanks Pat, great info and guidance
