As water temperatures rise, we tend to see lots of smaller profile baitfish school up in the shallows on flats.

Our goal is to always “Match The Hatch” and throw the same size and color lures as the bait in the water fish are feeding on.

Often overlooked is the actual depth with which the bait is holding in the water column.

All of these factors combined to give you a better idea of what type of lures you should be throwing.

Topwater lures like the Moonwalker are ideal for scenarios where the bait is close to the surface of the water and fish will be more willing to strike a meal above them.

Paying attention to the bait behavior as well as water depths will show you where and what lures to use.

If the bait is schooling up close to the surface, try out some topwater lures.

If the bait is lower in the water column, try different subsurface lures to see what triggers a bite!

Conclusion

Once you get out on the water, take in the scene and observe where the bait is and how they are behaving.

If the bait is close to the surface and popping out of the water, it is definitely time to break out the Salt Strong Moonwalker!!

Remember to stay in tune with current trends and patterns to determine the best lures on a given trip!
