I recently had the opportunity to speak to a group of high school kids from a local church.

As I was preparing to speak to them, I asked myself, “What would I have paid money to hear someone talk about when I was in high school?”

What would be so important that care-free high school guys would actually appreciate?

And I remembered a conference a few years ago that literally changed my life.

It changed:

• My relationship with my wife and kids
• My happiness
• My fulfillment
• My perception of money

I was in my mid-30’s at the time and I wish someone had told me this earlier, so I paid it forward by explaining it to these high school guys.

My Challenge To You

Most people will listen to this episode and not do anything about it.

Some will actually think about the five things they want people to say about them, and leave it at that.

But the people who really want to make a positive change in their life will do this:

1. Write down the five things that you want people to say about you at your funeral if you were truly living the life you want. These are your core beliefs, values, goals, and every decision you make should be filtered through these five things. For instance, I wrote down family man, loving, giving, funny, dependable and honest.
2. Think of a one sentence phrase that explains how you would serve the world. For example, Salt Strong’s simple mission is to, “Unite families through fishing.” (For more on your mission, listen to this.)
3. For each of the items on the list, ask yourself “why?” And then why again. If you have good answers to the why, then you’re on the right track. If you can’t or don’t have a good answer for why, then it might not be a good item.
4. Share it with someone. That makes it more real for you, and can even inspire them to do the same.
5. Hang it up somewhere. This is a good and constant reminder to yourself why and how you should live your life.
