Topwater lures VS. subsurface plugs – when should you use one over the other?
Both of these lures can be effective under similar conditions.
But ONE major factor really decides what will work best.

Get the Moonwalker Topwater Lure
The lures featured in the video are the Moonwalker topwater lure and the Skinny Lipper.
The Skinny Lipper is a floating hard-body jerk bait that can dive down 14-16 inches below the surface.
So when should you use each lure?
Usually, first thing in the morning I start out with a topwater lure.
Especially in spring, summer, and early fall during the warmer months.
Topwater is ideal during overcast or low-light conditions because the fish are feeding up at the surface.
If you notice the strikes are timid or you’re getting no strikes at all, then that is when I would switch over to the Skinny Lipper.
Or any lure that is subsurface that the fish will commit to.
Another example to break out the subsurface jerk bait is later in the morning.
When the sun gets higher and the fish aren’t going after topwater lures, that is when you want to make the switch.
The fish won’t be as willing to strike topwater lures later in the morning as they do at first light.
Keep in mind, you can fish a subsurface lure at any time of the day.
You don’t have to start every morning with a topwater lure but those are usually the best conditions for topwater action.
Although lures and lure selection are critical pieces of the puzzle, you need to be able to find the feeding fish first.
Fish move based on various conditions when it comes to inshore saltwater fishing.
Weather, tides, and additional variables all come into play that will determine where those fish move and provide the best situations for them to feed.
