For the past year, Luke and I have done our best to post a new saltwater fishing tip pretty much every single week of the year.
Some of the fishing tips were applicable to all anglers (like our knot contests), while some of the fishing tips were targeted at certain areas or certain fish (like our 5 Shortcuts to Catching Snook post)
So what we wanted to do here at the end of the year is post our top 7 most popular fishing tips (with a direct link to each tip in this post).
How are these fishing tips ranked?
They are in order of total social media shares (a combination of Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ likes, shares, retweets, etc).
Hope you enjoy and get some value from these.

I really appreciate your tip on catching and releasing your fish without killing them. My wife and I have been thinking of getting our father a fishing trip for his birthday so we can bond with him. If I catch a fish, I will use your tips to release it back safely!
Thanks for explaining that shrimp are the best kind of live or dead bait out there. My dad and his brother want to charter a boat to take the family fishing. I’ll have to make sure we have shrimp for bait as an option. http://rodbenderscharters.com/venice-fishing-charters-info/
I really like that you talked about how to throw the fish back in the water without killing them. I’m trying to get into fishing, but I don’t really know a lot about how to do it. Maybe your tips will be very useful to me. Do you have any other tips about fishing?
I really like your tip about how to properly catch and release fish without killing them. That seems like something that would be really helpful for us as we plan for our fishing trip. We have been wanting to take one for a while now so we will have to keep these tips in mind to help, thank you for sharing!
I have been wondering what types of knots work well with braided line. I don’t use it very often but since my husband and I are going to be doing some salt water fishing pretty soon, I decided to wrap my pole with some of that line. I’ll have to check out the Salt Strong YouTube channel and see if I can find something that will work for me. Thanks for sharing!
It of course depends on what types of lines used, but if you’re going to be using a light braided line (for max casting distance) with a heavier leader to withstand the sharp mouths of most saltwater fish, then I highly recommend the FG Knot because it has consistently won our knot contests: http://www.saltstrong.com/articles/fg-knot/.
Note: For the top knots on other connections, there are links at the bottom of the FG knot post (http://www.saltstrong.com/articles/fg-knot/) that will take to you our various knot contests.
My husband and I are going fishing for the first time this weekend. None of us have ever been and could use the tips. It looks like we are going to need the FG knot for the trip. Thanks for the link to the extra page. However, I think I might try getting one of those fishing shirts first.
Thanks Jessie. We look forward to seeing you in a Salt Strong shirt catching some big fish. Fish On!
My husband and I really enjoy fishing, but we tend to catch too much fish. Thank you so much for posting about how to release catch and release fish safely so that they don’t die. I definitely think that it is a waste of life if it isn’t used properly and so I think that we are going to start releasing some of our fish using the tips that I gathered from the link that you provided. https://www.indianheadfishinglodge.com/about-us/adventure-plan/
I can’t wait to get out and try some of these new tricks. I especially liked the article on how to catch redfish, snook, and trout. I think it all came down to knowing the fish well. I used to just grab some worms and go out hoping for the best. It doesn’t work that well. You have to get to know the fish first and find out what bait is best for them. I’m not saying worms don’t work, I’m just saying there is more to fishing than digging up worms.
Oh, these tips about salt water fishing sure would be useful for me to read before my trip. The trip that I’ll be going to would be next week with my uncle. He invited me to fish in a lake that’s filled with salt water.
It’s interesting that this article mentions catching and releasing fish without seriously injuring them. I didn’t think of this when I had the idea to go on a trip with my son. I’ll have to make sure to check out the full article before we go, thanks for the post!
