How I Found The Feeding Fish
When everything looks the same, I try to look for something that sticks out.
In this case, I was dialed in on bait coming up to the surface and I could see fish chasing them down.
Whenever I share a video like this from my trips, I always get asked the same two questions.
The first one is, “Where were you fishing?” followed by, “What were you catching those fish on?” meaning the lure.
While these are important questions, it isn’t the main focus of success.
The biggest factor is what I was doing while out on the water to detect the feeding fish and trigger strikes.
I could show you the spot and tell you the exact lures I was using.
But if you weren’t taking the same approach as I was, you might have a totally different experience.
I was out fishing a giant grass flat on this trip that extended out a few miles.
When you’re fishing in an area like this where everything looks the same, you need to follow the tide.
On this particular trip, there was a 2-foot tide swing.
At the beginning of the video, you could tell I was off the shoreline a bit.
But as the tide came in, I moved closer and closer to the grass line where by the end I was fishing in the grass itself.
The reason for this is that the tide came in.
When the tide was out, I moved out off the shoreline and when it was coming in I pushed further into the grass against the shore.
So it was not necessarily about the lures or spots, but it was more about moving with the tide to find those feeding fish.
It is critical to know what you’re going to do when you get out to the spot.
This is what we do here at Salt Strong.

Thank you sir!! That Gold Digger flat out works!
Agreed pat anytime I plan a trip I always know what the tides are doing or I should say supposed to be doing because these last couple years the tides seem to not follow what they were predicted to do for instance last weekend I fished one of my favorite areas faver dykes state park via pelicer creek the tide was supposed to be reletively high at around 630am daylight but dead high by 8am I usually like an incoming first thing in the morning with at least an hour before dead high well on that day last sat it wasn’t coming in at 630am but going out and I was told to use a different tide table for this area and that table said dead low was at 645am not dead high so it was a crazy day to say the least because in past trips to that area that tide table that I was told was way off before as well in fact even the park rangers that operate that area were stumped when I told them they could not figure it out but agreed if an angler knows the tide and what phase it’s in at the prescribed time of when one wants to fish he’or she is better prepared then an angler that has the best gear in the world but doesn’t know anything about the tides I have told numerous people this that have asked me about this area its usually asked by people tgat I meet when I’m finished fishing and am washing my boat at the ramp I always tell them to look at the tides first before planning any day spent there plus the fact that this area has pretty big tidal swings if one doesn’t learn the tides could end up high and dry and waiting for the tide to come back in deep enoug to get out again I know I have had it happen to me on several different occasions but like they always say live and learn and fishing is always a constant learning experience thanks for the info and all you do👍😉
Yes sir! Tides are a huge deal! And some areas one is better than another so it’s just one more piece to the puzzle you have to know.
Thanks for the feedback Steven!
Great video and explanations on why and how it worked for you!
Thanks Michael!!
