On-The-Water Analysis
We started off throwing jigs and different rigs on the bottom for bites.
But with little to no luck, we changed tactics and started trolling.
It didn’t take long for a bonito to come up and take the Clark Spoon and Planer we set out behind the boat.
We got that fish up and into the live well but my camera battery died right before we landed it.
Soon after something else bent the rod over and Daniel hooked up to another fish on a different rod at the same time!
Once we reeled in those fish and put them in the live well, I saw more fish busting the surface close by.
We hit the gas and sped over to get a line in the water.
Within a few cranks of the reel, my drag was screaming!!!
From there on out, we kept trolling and looking for action on the surface and kept hooking into solid fish.
As far as lures went for this trip, we used two different methods for trolling.
The first was a deep diver that went about 15-20 feet below the surface and the second was a Planer with a Clark Spoon on the end.
With one lure a bit higher up and the other lower, we were able to effectively fish the entire area and cover more ground.
This is absolutely critical to know exactly where those fish are feeding to consistently get tight lines.
When we saw fish busting the surface, all we did was reel metal epoxy jigs super fast over the schools for strikes.
You’ve got to be prepared and ready when sight fishing for bonito.
When these fish feed on the surface, it is only for a few seconds to a minute and then they will dive back down.
Overall, the key is to get your lines quickly in the water and reel FAST!
