Hunters try to get all of the scent off of them before they go into the woods, so why don’t anglers do that, too?
Sure, we’re not going into the water ourselves, but we’re touching our line and lures all over before putting them down into the water.
According to Paul Johnson’s book, The Scientific Angler, here are some of the scents that repel fish:
- L-serine (human skin oil)
- Nicotine
- Petroleum and derivatives, including gas and motor oil
- Suntan lotions
- Bug repellents
- Chemical plasticizers added to soften plastics
- Perfumed soaps
Almost all anglers have some of these scents on their hands, which might be costing them fish!
So to help with that, we created this new scent remover hand soap.
It neutralizes these odors so fish aren’t instantly repelled by your line or lure.
And you can get this hand and lure cleaner from our shop here.

Consider using a small resealable container for the back of your boat. Put in a little bit of the Dr. Juice soap or the non scented soap of your choice. Equip it with a small finger cleaning brush or small hand brush. You can wash your hands in the small container and you can quickly brush off your lure each time you catch a fish. Remember that the good Dr. also said in the book that the blood of your fish is also a turn off to the same species of fish. Just a quick brushing will clean the blood scent off your lure before you throw it back out. The brushing will also remove the ProCure or other Dr. Juice scents you might have put on your lure. If I use scents on my lures, I always scrub them to get the scent smell off the lure at the end of the day before I put the lure back in the box.
I keep a container of baking soda dampened with Dawn dish soap in my boat to eliminate any smells. Dawn is a degreaser and baking soda eliminates odor. Your mom ever put a box of baking soda in the frig to eliminate odors.
Doesnt dawn have its own scent and wouldnt it likely act as a slight deterrant to the keen noses of picky fish? I was thinking the same about dawn myself as it mostly neutral but had second thoughts. Any thoughts or experiments on that guys???
Freshwater trout are very sensitive and washing hands with a dab of basic toothpaste works well.
Guys, Ive seen your videos about toxic sunscreens. Contact Stream2Sea sunscreen if you want to make difference in the fishing industry and help club members. Everybody needs to know this. It is a mineral based sunscreen that is safe for you and doesn’t chase away or harm fish and other aquatic life. No scent remover necessary!
