Can fishing heal people?
They say the sea can heal, that the sound of the waves can bring peace, and that the ebb and flow of the tides can restore balance. Maybe it’s the ocean’s vastness, its untamed nature, or simply that it helps us escape the hustle and bustle of life’s demands.
As anglers, many of us experience the restorative escape that being on the water can bring us.
Sometimes, the healing we seek goes much deeper.
In 2013 at the age of 10, Ethan Fabac found out he had cancer. Through his challenges and treatments, he found a love for fishing and conservation that has become a lifelong passion.
This is Ethan’s story.
Salt Strong and the Salt Strong Alliance are honored to share Ethan’s story with you. It’s the reminder we all need that this sport needs protection and is worth fighting for.
That’s why Salt Strong has partnered with the Shuman Foundation to create the Salt Strong Alliance: Our non-profit TAKE-ACTION conservation arm of the Salt Strong Fishing Club.
Keep your eyes open for more stories like Ethan’s that share the power of how fishing and conservation can change lives and inspire us!

‘LIVE STRONG’
Very moving story and I’m so glad Ethan has found a passion for fishing as a coping mechanism. Although not a cancer patient being a Vietnam vet it has been my console as well. I wish you all the best, Ethan!
Congratulations Ethan! Although at times in life, especially when faced with adversity, happiness seems impossible. However, as we know… all things are possible with God. I am glad that your dad introduced you to fishing at an early age and allowed you to discover something that moves your heart and allows you to see the goodness in life… beyond adversity. I pray that fishing will always bring you that blessing.
A 32 year Marine veteran with multiple combat tours left me feeling lost after departing the Corps. I missed the brotherhood and my private battles with PTSD made life less than exciting. Having become a snow bird at Marco Island, FL I decided that I would take-up fishing. With little knowledge of fishing (none with inshore salt water fishing) I was not successful. However, after discovering Salt Strong and several hours of study and investing in the correct equipment I have learned to fish well. I fish alone most of the time… I enjoy the tactics and strategy, the beautiful sites, and the peace. Thank you Salt Strong!
Thank you for your service. God bless you.
Wonderful, inspiring story! Thanks for sharing!
