Conclusion
Night fishing has its own set of advantages and disadvantages for inshore saltwater anglers.
It necessitates a different approach and an adjustment in tactics but you can find feisty fish hanging around docks or bridges during all hours of the night.
Be sure to cover all depths of the water column to find where the fish are holding!

Any suggestions on lure color while night fishing? I find it kind of difficult telling the clarity of the water when I can’t see
Super helpful—thanks! I spent a few nights fishing those docks on Gasparilla, too. That last dock before you get to the pass was always loaded with snook.
This was by far my favorite podcast.
So glad you guys talked about flats instead of just bridges & docks.
I really want to get out to some of my daytime spots at night and give it a shot.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
What lights do you have turned on while night fishing? I know you would have navigation lights on but would you have your spot lights on or just use a head lamp? Is there a disadvantage to having your main boat lights on?
Your story about your younger times hit home. My folks would take the whole herd to the pier for night fishing. We were always told to cast to the edge of the lights because in the brighter center was all the schoolie trout and keeper and larger ambushed from the edges. Great stories with the education!
Great podcast gentlemen, full of VERY useful info !! The hours mentioned for best catching is spot on & the whole experience of catching BIG fish in the dark just enhances the enjoyment of the THUMP !!! Thanks for all of your efforts !!!
Great video. I like going out at night. Have had some successful trips. Saw spectacular shooting stars. But the over night trips can be TIRING! Definitely worth it in the Summer.
I, for one, would absolutely love to see a night fishing mastery course. Being a natural born night owl (which I’ve always blamed on being a Navy brat born on the opposite side of the world), I’ve always been interested in giving it a serious try. The added factors of escaping the heat and crowds only make it more appealing. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve thrown a shrimp or two under a dock light every now and then, but have never put in a dedicated, methodical effort.
There are two variations of night fishing that quite a few folks around here (Pensacola) seem to gravitate towards: shark fishing off the beach, or hunting for bridge monsters under the Three Mile bridge. Both can be a tremendous amount of fun… but they are both a bit too involved to be every day activities (quite a bit of bulky specialized gear that needs to be hauled out, you need a separate certification to specifically target sharks from shore, neither one is safe to do solo for various reasons, etc.). Alternatively, I would love to build a skill set that allows me to see the conditions on a random Tuesday night and decide to grab a rod and my backpack and head out the door.
The Finding Spots mastery course literally changed the way I approach fishing. Something like this has the potential to give me an entirely new skill set. Yes, please!
P.S.- I am also very much looking forward to the Surf Fishing mastery course you guys are working on with Bama Beach Bum. I’m currently in the midst of falling back in love with surf fishing and am eagerly anticipating all the extra little details that you guys tend to pack into these courses. Plus, it helps that Matt is essentially a local guy (Alabama east of Mobile Bay is indistinguishable from the western end of the Florida panhandle as far as fisheries go).
Great discussion of night fishing basics. One question I have is when fishing a bridge, all things being equal, is it better to fish the uptide side or the downtide side?
Is there any reason to run a dirty deeks leader rig in an inlet at night?
