Mississippi has a strong inshore and offshore fishery that is often overlooked.
The Mississippi coast is right in the heart of the incredible Gulf Coast fishery.
It offers fantastic action for redfish, jack crevalle, trout and more inshore and snapper, grouper and pelagic species offshore.
For most fishermen new to an area or for visiting anglers, finding solid fishing spots is one the toughest parts.
Having GPS coordinates to some solid fishing spots can make a real difference in your catch rate.
So how can find some great fishing spots in Mississippi?
Mississippi Department Of Marine Resources Artificial Reef Program
The Artificial Reef Program of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR) is responsible for artificial reef development in Mississippi’s marine waters and adjacent federal waters.
Since the program was established, the DMR has created 91 inshore and offshore artificial reefs for recreational anglers.
Mississippi is special compared to other fisheries because of the amount of inshore artificial reefs accessible to anglers.
There are also many offshore reefs that offer great potential for bigger fish.
In addition to creating artificial reefs, the DMR also uses sonar devices to locate naturally-occurring structures on the bottom that are good sites for fishermen.
Mississippi Inshore Artificial Reef Program
Mississippi has one the best inshore artificial reef programs in the country and offers more inshore artificial reef sites than any other Gulf Coast state.
Today, there are 67 different inshore artificial reefs.
These reefs are made from a number of different materials including crushed concrete, limestone, and oyster shell.
The reefs house species such as trout, redfish, black drum, jack, mackerel and more.
The DMR offers information on these reefs on their website, such as GPS numbers of the inshore artificial reef sites.

Mississippi Offshore Artificial Reef Program
There are 15 permitted offshore artificial reef sites in Mississippi.
The sites combined offer approximately 16,000 acres of artificial reef. These sites range from 8 to 10,000 acres.
Reef sites north of any barrier island are made out of concrete. Reef sites south of the barrier islands are made out of concrete culverts, steel hull vessels, and “Florida Limestone” artificial reef pyramids.
