Redhead Moonwalker Topwater Lure
When you fish with a split ring, you need to use a snug knot to tie the leader to the lure.
If you’re not using a split ring, you should be using a loop knot.
Split rings and loop knots alike allow for more freedom of motion.
This makes certain your lure puts off the best action to attract strikes.
If you pause while retrieving a lure with a split ring, the weight of the split ring brings your line down.
That is an easy way to get your line fouled up and caught on the hooks.
Split rings are also just one more thing that could potentially fail on the entire system.
Loop knots are extremely simple and effective.
I highly recommend removing the split ring from your lures and utilizing a loop knot.

when using a loop knot with the Johnson Silver Minnow for example,. can the sharp edges of the “hole” cut your leader? Conversely, would using a snug knot to tie to then split ring be better?
never mind, My question has already been answered, Sorry for the redundancy.
Good eye Troy; I use the loop knot often especially in grassy area just for the reason Troy noted. I think with 15-20 pound fluorocarbon/large loop it adds some of weedless defence to lure.
The loop knot is tied incorrectly. The tag end is facing back to the main leader. The tag end should be facing the bait with that loop knot. I noticed this in the (Why should you use a loop knot video).
Thanks never really thought about the way you use treble hooks before verses, using a straight hook. I grew up fishing fresh water, now saltwater fish mostly thanks again for pointers
You’re welcome Carroll!
While I never had the problem of the line being pulled down so it fouls my hook but to me that would have to be a very big split ring considering they don’t weigh very much plus the fact that split rings have a tendency of cutting into the line because when tightened the line will slide eventually to the sharp part of tge ring but ever since I started using the bill norman speed clips and I only use them on my plugs no spinnerbaits or jigs or shrimp or other soft plastic lures I have found that these clips work great in that they kinda act like a loop knot being that the clip part that attaches to the lure is round it gives the lure freedom of movement like the loopknot does and they are very strong as well yea loopknots do have there place and for me its any soft plastic lure thanks for the info and all you do🤔👍
You’re welcome Steven! The clips can definitely be a bit safer than the split rings.
