The biggest mistake when fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork is not using the RIGHT leader length!!
You have to make sure you’re adjusting the leader length in accordance with the water depth.
When fishing in shallow water, you typically want your bait about halfway down the water column.
So if you are fishing in 2 feet of water, you should be using a 1-foot leader.
As the water depth increases with the tide, be sure to stop and retie to fish with the proper leader length.
Or if you are fishing an outgoing tide, you can reduce the length of your leader with the tide.
How To Retrieve A Popping Cork
Popping corks and live shrimp are a quick way to get tight lines, especially in the colder months.
Just be sure you’re not making this mistake countless anglers make each time they fish with popping corks.

Thanks Pat. Great tip Will keep this in mind next trip
Thanks. I will start adjusting. How bad is it when bait actually touches bottom? I seem to catch flounder in these cases.
With live bait you have the risk of a fish stealing your bait before the cork goes under. It’s best to hover just above the bottom.
