In the market for a new reel?
I’ve been using the Kast King Sharky III on some kayak fishing trips recently and have been enjoying it.
It’s inexpensive, hardy (still really smooth despite several kayak trips) and has a strong drag system.
Check out the video below for the full review.
Enjoy!

I was looking for a reel at that price point but wanted one without the reverse switch… I’ve been looking at images of this reel online but can’t seem to find one of that area…does it have one?
Hey Raymond!
It does not have a reverse switch.
Been using the Kast King Sharky reels and Estuary Inshore rods for years. They are as good as any Diawa, Shimano and Quantum reels and equal to St Croix rods I’ve owned.
Solid gear for the price for sure!
I was going to send in a request for reviews on cheaper reels from companies like piscifun and kastking, but decided to search the site first. I purchased the sharky III as my first inshore reel since I am fairly new to the inshore game and just wanted something cheaper and what seemed to be reliable. I love this reel, it has held up very nicely for me. I have come to love most of kastking’s product, they really do seem to put out a competitive product at such a lower price point. I have since got my hands on some more expensive equipment and still love the sharky. Thanks for the review!
My pleasure Ryan! I did this review over 2 years ago and I still have these reels and they work perfectly!
Hey Tony, I am not sure if you still get alerted when we comment on your older posts but I have this reel (3500) and I like it a lot. It is currently set up on my 7’6″ med fast penn rod I use for inshore fishing. With its really strong drag though, I was thinking about moving it to my surf rod for beach and jetty fishing and upgrading my inshore reel to those fancy Ballistic MQ reels once they are in stock. Or should I keep the sharky on the inshore setup and put a BG MQ on the surf rod?
Hey Mike!
I still have 2 of these reels and they are still smooth as butter. I actually use them as back-up reels or “beater” reels as I like to call them. They can definitely work great as surf/jetty reels, especially with the very strong drag.
I have a 3000 size KK SharkyIII and a SharkyIII bait feeder, I find the reels to be terrific, I have caught Reds, Snook, Trout, and massive size Sheephead. Awesome reel, it is a bit slow in the retrieve, but I have adjusted well to that. I’ve had it for about 3 years and it is still going strong I will recommend this reel to anyone who enjoys fishing.
Awesome, same here!
I made this review 3 years ago and still have both reels working smoothly.
Hi Tony, how has this reel held up over a year? Would the 3000 be good for bass fishing with 20 lb braid? I’m thinking about getting one for that, I don’t do it much.
Still crankin! I used it a lot over the past winter for sheepshead and drum around bridges with 20lb line and it worked like a champ.
have the Sharky 3 gold 1000 and just ordered another one great tough reels. holds plenty of 15lb braid. I fish from a paddle board for snook, tarpon etc. The staff at Kast King are always very helpful if you give them a call.
Being a Canadian thanks for the good wood do an inexpensive reel. Look for inexpensive rods now
Best Regards always
