Jighead Skipping Distance Experiment [Round Eye vs Football]

When you’re fishing around deeper water, using a jighead can get your bait to the bottom quicker.
But which jighead style skips the best to get you closer to where the fish are holding around docks and mangroves?
In this video, Luke and I tested three popular jighead styles to see which one outperforms the rest!
Jighead Skipping Contest
Essential Gear
- Lure: Mulligan Paddletail
- Rigging 1: 1/4-oz Hoss Football Jighead
- Rigging 2: 1/4-oz Hoss Round Eye Jighead
- Rigging 3: 1/4-oz Hoss Weedless Football Jighead
Key Takeaways
- All three jighead styles are capable of skipping.
- Round eye jigheads have the best skipping performance due to their profile closely lining up with the Mulligan’s.
- When you’re using a weedless football jighead for skipping, make sure you push the lure body up against the weight to reduce wobble.
- Switching to a heavier jighead will reduce the skipping performance.

What is the SIZE of hooks used in this video?
The hooks themselves are all 4/0
Great info on skipping. I’ll get out and try some skipping. Thanks
You’re welcome Ron!
How well do you think the flat sided, weedless trout eyed jig would work? I think the flat sides let it sink faster, and I would like it to be weedless under docks.
Sounds like the Texas Eye jig head you’re referring to. If so, the sink rate really wouldn’t be any different. Would be very similar to the hoss weedless football jig as far as sink rate and skipping.
interesting i dont do that much but i think it is worth tring around docks.
Skipping lures is an important skill to have in the toolbox. A lot of fish hide under cover and structure. Only way to get a lure in front of them is to skip!
Interesting comparison. Would the lures skip farther if the distance that the lure first lands on the water is shorter?
Thanks Ray! Not necessarily. It’s more the trajectory and speed of the lure. The more of an angle that the lure hits the water, the less it’s going to skip.
What are the most common scenarios where we’d be skipping “underneath” structure and not want to be weedless? In the video, deep structure like a dock was mentioned, however I feel like I would snag everything with an open jighead haha.
Docks mainly. That’s why casting accuracy and practice is super important. If you want a better skip you’ll want to use an open faced jig head or a heavier weedless hook. I prefer jig heads under deeper docks since it gets the lure down faster and you can jig the bottom.
Good stuff, gents!
Thanks Joe!
That new round eye jighead is my go-to these days.
Great all around jig head!
Gotta love that round eye
For sure!
