On a recent trip, I found some structure along a shoreline so I stopped to fish around it.
The tide was moving from my back to front and the wind was moving from the front to back in opposite directions.
The wind was pushing the bait out towards me and the trout were all stacked up behind the broken tree branch structure waiting to jump out and ambush a meal.
Because the wind picked up just enough, I was able to cast to the trout without getting too close and possibly spooking them.
So What’s Most Important??
The short answer: BOTH!
But I recommend you observe which of the two is STRONGEST on that given day.
You always want to be situationally aware of your surroundings and any changes to the weather around you.
This is critical intel for you to be able to make a judgment and cast where you think the fish should be.
Especially in the fall and winter, broken bottom structure of any form is your best friend when targeting speckled trout.
The trout will hold up behind structure to wait and ambush unsuspecting bait to pass by.
Keep an eye on the weights you are using on your hooks or jigheads because it can have a huge impact on your success.

Anytime you can find moving water carrying bait near broken structure is when you will find trout.
These are ideal zones to fish, especially in late fall and early winter.
Be sure to keep your eyes peeled and periodically check in with the weather and your surroundings to take note of any changes.
Sometimes it’s what is around you that tells you how the fish are biting!

Good first fishing tip Evan! For me, wind changes a lot, not for the better. It seems to make things more complicated, etc. Good info!
Thanks a ton sir! Yes it can definitely make it tricky! But make spots a little more predictable sometimes is the good news!
Hi. I noticed I can no longer access the URL for best fishing times and tides. It had the sonar function and weather radar, did the access or URL change recently?
Thanks Eric…
