Getting Into The Kayak
The biggest mistake you could make when getting back into your kayak after getting out of it is putting your feet in the kayak first.
You will lose your balance and possibly fall out of the kayak.
First, you want to brace both sides of the kayak with your hands and arms.
This gives you control and keeps the kayak tipping one way or the other.
Then, use your momentum to hop up onto the kayak and sit side-saddled with your feet dangling off the side.
This will keep your balance centered on the kayak.
Another thing to make note of is keeping your head above the center of the kayak.
Lastly, just swing your legs over the side of the kayak and in.
Getting Out Of The Kayak
To get out of the kayak, place your arm on the opposite side that you are getting out of.
This lets you keep pressure on the opposite side of the kayak to prevent it from tipping over.
Then, swing your legs over the side and into the water.
Be sure to maintain pressure on the opposite side you are getting out of.
Finally, just slide out of the kayak and onto your feet in the water.
Getting in and out of a kayak seems very simple but if you tip it over or fall in the water, that can make or break your day out fishing!

How you doing Tony I have quick question I just got into the kayak fishing I bought a old town sportsman autopilot 120 and I’m trying to install my fish finder from my boat I have a lowrance hook reveal 7 ts I want to kbow wish transducer to use Help please. Thank you
Hey Jonathan!
Did it come with a transducer and you are not sure which one it is? Or did you buy the unit but it didn’t come with a transducer?
The Hook Reveal 7 is compatible with either a triple shot (ts) transducer which allows for side scan and down scan, or the split shot which just gives you down scan.
The triple shot transducer is very large so it could be a bit difficult to mount to the kayak. The split shot is smaller.
I’m not too sure if the sportsman autopilot has a mounting area for transducers, so definitely be sure to ask this question in our community as well. I know a lot of members have that same kayak and may have some more tips for you:

Tony is the expert when it comes to fishing from a kayak
I have learned a lot from watching his videos. Keep up the great work
Thank you for the awesome feedback Frank!
I had to do that last trip as my costas went overboard. The water was up to my waist but the same technique worked. This is a good video for kayakers especially newbies!
Definitely works as long as your feet can touch bottom. Just need a little extra jump the deeper it gets. Can be a little messy if its muddy though!
The other good thing about bringing your shoes in last is they can be rinsed off by swishing them around a little bit to remove any mud before swinging them into the boat.
Great point as well!
Great tip Tony. I am getting ready to buy an Outback so this should be helpful. I also watched the video on deep water re-entry and I have a question/request. It seems like the technique that Joe used might no work on an Outback. Would you think about making a deep water re-entry video using the Outback?
Thanks.
Thanks Chris! That can definitely be done! Might have to be when the water warms back up though haha.
Tony this is a great tip, we have folks in Hobie fishing kayaks every day and getting in and out of the kayaks is certainly our biggest liability issue. You always have wonderful and informative information. Best regards, Russ LaCoste @ kayakfishingcharleston.com
Thank you for the kind words and awesome feedback Russ!
