“It’s like a 95-year-old using an iPhone to just call and text.”
Fish finders are some of the greatest, yet misunderstood tools that anglers have.
Most of us are like the 95-year-old mentioned above and are just barely scratching the surface with all that our fish finders can do.
Plus, when you consider how expensive they are, realizing you aren’t getting the full use of them is a downright tragedy!
So we brought one of the best fish finder experts in the world on to the podcast today to help us better understand them.
Neal Combs is the expert who trains the experts at Bass Pro and West Marine.
Plus, he’s from Navico, who represents all the top brands, so he’s not biased towards one brand or another.
In this episode he covers:
- A funny story of how he forced himself to learn how to use his fish finder
- Pros and cons of 2D vs. 3D imaging
- How to use your fish finder to help you save time and gas money when finding fishing spots
- The top misconceptions about fish finders, brands, and all their capabilities
- How to use the “flashlight effect” to find more fish
- The best brands of fish finders (and how to choose which one is right for you)
- And much more!
Now Neal is one of the main instructors in our new Fish Finder Mastery course, so if you want to dive deeper into how to use your fish finder, click here to sign up for the Early Bird VIP list (and get access to the HUGE Black Friday discount!).

Hello,
I just recently purchased a Hobbie Pro 14 and looking for some good advise on which fish finder to purchase. I will use it to target to target deep saltwater fish as i troll. I have a Helix 5 with DI and looking to upgrade to better unit. What units fishfinding units are people running on the larger kayaks. I’ve even heard that there are units that have tide chart already programed into them.
Hey Joe…….call me old fashioned. My fish finders are located on either side of my nose, paired with a good pair of polarized sunglasses. No course needed for that!!
