Mulligan Rig:
When fishing with the Mulligan or other paddletail lures, the core goal is to feel weight on the end of your line.
Toss the lure out where you know there are fish and start reeling.
Don’t go to set the hook before you feel weight or a thump on the end of your line.
Once you feel some weight, bury the hook into the fish’s mouth.
For the most part, the fish will hook themselves.
Keep the line tight and when you feel the weight, lift your rod up to set the hook.
You don’t have to aggressively set the hook.
By using a wild hook-setting motion, you risk losing more fish and potentially creating a bigger hole in the fish’s mouth.
That’ll lead to losing more fish.
As long as you’re fishing with sharp hooks and braided line, let the fish set the hook themselves.
A calm pullback on the rod is all that is needed.

Another great video, thanks Luke.
Always a bonus when the fish cooperate for the camera.
Thanks James! Yes, I sure wish that the fish were always nice enough to bite while the camera is rolling.

Good info, thanks Luke!
Thanks John!
Excellent video and info Luke. The 2 most common reasons I see guys loosing fish is a loose drag when setting the hook or fishing with a wet noodle rod.
Drag- I watch a bunch of videos online with guys setting the hook and the drag not properly set. They go and set the hook and you can hear the drag slip and they fight the fish for a minute or two before loosing the fish. They don’t understand why they lost the fish. Hook never drives in the mouth due to that loose drag.
Wet Noodle rod- I was fishing with my neighbor about a month ago and he kept loosing fish on paddletails while setting the hook. I noticed his custom-built rod tip was too soft. The rod tip was absorbing the hook set. He switched to a little bit stiffer rod and started catching fish.
Great tips Garrett!
“ Bill Dance hook set”. Cracking me up. And I love how you giggle every time you hook up. It makes me laugh. Great tip.
Glad to see that you enjoyed this lesson!
Its hard not to get too excited when the big one bites! I’ve been known to snatch a few holes in some lips! I’ve never set it so hard I fell out of the boat though, at least not yet 🙂
Haha!
