How to Rig Sand Fleas [VIDEO]
First things first, you have to catch some sand fleas!
Be sure to check out Blane’s last video on how to catch and store sand fleas HERE.
In this video, we’re using a standard pompano rig.
Most fishermen will use a 1/0 or 2/0 hook.
You will find these types of rigs at just about any tackle shop.
The first technique involves sliding the hook point through the side of the head of the sand flea.
Be careful not to hook the middle of the bait.
Slide the hook out through the shell and you’re ready to go.
Sand fleas are best used on pompano or hook-drop rigs that don’t sit on the bottom.
But if you’re using a Carolina or similar style rig, you want to rig sand fleas very differently.
Find the digger on the flea and open it up, then insert the hook point at the base of the digger until it comes through the other side.
This prevents the flea from being able to use the digger and also exposes the eggs – which is what the fish want.
Lastly, if all you’re getting are the bigger sand fleas, don’t throw them back.
You can still use the larger ones to catch fish.
Start by rigging them as you normally would as mentioned earlier.
Then, cut the flea in half using a pair of scissors.
