First and foremost, you want crabs that appear to be healthy and lively.

Try to choose crabs that have all their swimmers and legs intact.

Also, you preferably want to select the male crabs as opposed to female crabs because of the egg sac.

Males seem to hold up a bit better on the hook after multiple casts as well.

If you have the opportunity to pick through crabs and select your own, then you want healthy, male crabs.

When it comes to the size of the crab, the bigger ones are best used for targeting tarpon and larger species.

Our objective was to sight cast for these permit and the larger crabs aren’t favorable for that type of fishing.

Medium-sized crabs are best.

If you can, pick the ones that are the most lively and full of energy.

We rigged these crabs up on 3/0 circle hooks using 30lb leader.

Sight casting with live bait can spark some INSANE bites out on the water.

Just be sure you have the right size bait.

Too big or too small and you risk losing out on the target species.

This is good stuff! Thanks for the excellent tip! I’m surprised the Captain chooses 30lb leader on Permit. I’ve seen lots of footage on how strong Permit are especially around structure that 50lb to 60lb is required…and this is coming from anglers that catch plenty of them. Well those were on bridges maybe is different on boat. I want to learn more on catching Permit. This is great stuff!
