How To Catch An Inshore Slam Using Artificial Lures In Under An Hour (Without A Beard)!

I know what you are thinking…
It’s impossible to catch an inshore slam without a beard… haha.
But it’s also pretty tough to consistently catch an inshore slam (Snook, Redfish, Trout) in under an hour without any live bait (100% artificial lures).
Yet, that is what I have witnessed my brother Luke do time and time again…
In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw him throw a cast net (except for his cast net tutorial)
And yes, we do realize the following about the video below:
- These particular inshore fish were all a bit on the small size
- We know that a true inshore slam is caught by a single angler, but the footage of Luke’s trout was lost due to a GoPro being accidentally turned off (however, you do get to see yours truly bringing up a couple of small trout)
- Luke should never shave his beard as he looks like a young kid without it…
Let me share with you one of the most important lessons Luke has taught me that has helped me simplify my tackle, rarely use live bait, yet consistently catch inshore fish like redfish, snook, and trout…
Simplify Your Tackle.
The biggest lesson that I have learned from fishing with Luke (both with and without beard) is to simplify my tackle and become an expert at a few lures.
When I go fishing with Luke, we pretty always catch fish, and I have noticed he rarely ever changes lures.
He has become a true “specialist” at using a small handful of lures.
In fact, during this 10-day streak of catching inshore slams (with much bigger fish than in the video below), Luke pretty much only used the following two lures:
- DOA CAL Jerk Bait (Root Beer Chartreuse) – you can see them here on Amazon.com
- Berkley Saltwater Gulp Jerk Shad (Watermelon Red Glitter) – you can see them here on Amazon.com
That is all we needed that day to catch an inshore slam in under an hour.
And most days, those are the only two artificial lures we took out with us in the boat.
We simply followed the mullet in the mangroves, used these two lures, and continued to get strike after strike.
I’ve come a LONG way from the days of carrying around my monster tackle box loaded down with every type of lure, hook, weight, spoon, and spinner bait you can imagine…

Inshore Slam No Beard Video
Luke With A Beard
As you probably noticed, Luke did not have his glorious beard in the video as this was footage from our wild month of living on Little Gasparilla Island last March.
The great news today is two-fold…
- Luke realized that he can grow a beard
- Bearded Luke catches more fish now than ever before
Here is a pic of Luke with a beard in one of our new performance hoodies. Night and day difference from the “little kid” in the picture above.
Enjoy.
