See the FULL Study mentioned in the video
Not too long ago, there was a study conducted in the Chesapeake Bay system about some of the fish we’re after and how they see colors.
One of those fish was spotted seatrout.
They ultimately discovered that seatrout do NOT see the color green.
This includes the middle color wavelength of yellow to green.
This means trout are Green-Red color blind.
When it comes to human beings, this is also the most common type of color blindness.
Green and yellow objects are not invisible to trout.
They don’t see it the same way we do.
Instead of green or yellow, they see different shades of a muddy brown color.
So how is this helpful to us?
If you’re thinking of making a switch from a lighter color to a light color, it doesn’t make a huge difference to trout.
The same applies on the other end of the spectrum when switching from dark green to a brown lure.
Instead, you need to make drastic lure color changes.
For example, switching from a dark lure color to a light color.

Do you think instead of using colors trout don’t see we should use what they see? Example use brown instead of green.r
Eye opening, this was an awesome video! It will change the way I choose colors while fishing. Thanks Pat!
Great video and it will make a difference on what lures to use!
Science is the best. I wonder if water color impacts this. For instance, in dirty water does a pink look different to a white lure or does a trout still see both the same. Also, do fishermen with red / green blindness catch more fish as we now know they see like a trout. I have no color blindness so that gives me another much needed excuse for getting skunked.
WOW!!! This is going to change how i going to make my lure choices in the future.
Thank you for the science in the trouts vision of colors.
Very cool info. I think that this supports the concept that lure colors catch more humans than fish. So, should we stick to the basics when selecting lures, that is, go dark or light. But more importantly, find the feeding fish first.
Spot on! Worry about finding the feeding fish and then dial in the presentation. I stick with a handful of colors and switch from light to dark to see if they have a preference
I think it makes a lot of sense. Seems like the darker colors they stay dark lighter change Two Whiter
Blues and purples look the same to them, they see that wavelength well. But don’t stop using what works for you!
I like the idea of making a big change when changing colors makes sense now thinking about how the fish see,
That’s a solid plan! I do the same.
Well, I’m color blind and I couldn’t see any difference in any of your lure examples. I suppose I see like a trout.
If you’re red-green color blind, then yes, you and trout see the same. I think that might be an advantage in some way. Making a color change for you would be the same as what a trout would see. I could be making a mistake thinking that I’m making a difference but actually not.
Thanks for watching!
Very cool knowledge drop! So that chartreuse suspending twitch bait I bought today actually looks more life-like to the trout than it does to me. :). The more you know!
Thanks! Whatever the video revealed, doesn’t really change with what works. Chartreuse is a great color to use!
