We’ve got a simple exercise for you that you can do from the comfort of your own home (even when sitting on the couch!).

All you need is a laser pointer and your ceiling.

One problem many people have with fly casting is that their hand moves side-to-side too much.

When this happens, the fly loses some of its momentum, so they can’t cast as far or as accurate as they’d like.

To help correct that, all you need to do is get a laser pointer and pretend like you’re casting your fly rod.

You can look at the red dot on the ceiling and if it’s not moving in a straight line, you can slow it down and be very intentional about keeping your hand moving straight.

With some practice, pretty soon you’ll be moving the laser (and eventually, the rod tip) in a straight line.

That was an awesome tip. I think I have a laser pointer around the house if not I will get one. Can’t wait to implement that exercise. I am a saltwater fly fisherman (maybe 2 or 3 years now – intermediate skill set) and understand that it is a journey that never stops. Look forward to seeing more of your tips. Definitely would love to see some tips on casting into the wind, the effect of rod cost on casting, and getting longer and more accurate casts. Thanks a ton!!
