Hobie “Segundo” Sunglasses Review

Imagine being able to see things in the water that other people can’t see.
Like having a special kind of X-ray vision when you look down into any body of water.
Well for those of you that don’t own a pair of polarized sunglasses yet, that is exactly what you are missing out on!
In fact, it seems downright crazy that we used to go fishing back in the days without polarized sunglasses.
Kind of like thinking about how we used to have to go the airport to pick someone up without a cell phone. They only thing we had to rely on was calling up the airline’s (800) hotline, typing in the flight number, and basing our entire airport pickup on that automated toll free line…
(for you youngsters that have had the Internet and text messages most of your life, this is what we used to have to do when picking someone up at the airport…seems archaic even writing about it now…)
On a similar matter, I feel that it is archaic to be out on the water (or even outdoors for extended periods of time) without a pair of polarized sunglasses.
It gives you a distinct advantage over regular sunglasses (or your eyes without any sunglasses), not to mention it takes the glare away from your eyes, preventing you from squinting or getting tired eyes.
The great news today is that polarized glasses don’t cost a fortune. You can even pick up a cheap pair at a convenience store.
However, always keep in mind that you usually get what you pay for…(especially when it comes to having things in or around saltwater)
And after testing out numerous polarized glasses, I can attest that the type of lens makes all of the difference.
So just because you see a pair of cheap glasses that says “Polarized” at your local gas station, doesn’t mean you can see into the water as well as your friend with a legit pair of polarized glasses.
Which brings me to my next point.
Hobie’s Polarized Sunglasses
For the record, we are not being paid or incentivized (besides getting a free pair of glasses to do an honest review on) by Hobie in any way, shape or form to do this Hobie “Segundo” sunglasses review.
In fact, when Hobie first contacted us about sending us some glasses to give them some honest feedback, we said, “Hobie? As in the Hobie Cat company that makes sailboats, surfboards, kayaks, and paddleboards?
The last thing I think of is nice fishing glasses when I think of Hobie.
And in full transparency, my brother Luke and I have primarily worn Costa’s (and I have a couple pair of Maui Jim’s as well).
But Hobie clearly aims to change their brand to be associated with the very best polarized glasses out there.
So much that they believed in their glasses enough to tell us to give our honest feedback…whether it be positive or negative…
Here goes.

Conclusion
Don’t be surprised if you see Luke and I wearing Hobie sunglasses more and more into the future.
My personal favorite is the Hobie Baja (see the Baja sunglasses review here).
While Luke prefers these Segundo frames (both sunglasses from the Hobie “Heritage” Collection”)
Overall, their lenses can compete with any and all of the big polarized glasses companies, and these Hobie glasses look great as well.
Not to mention, the sunglass case they come in with the clip (to safely secure them to your tackle box, etc) is brilliant!
There is nothing worse than having to set down your nice sunglasses when you are out on the water with little or no dry storage, just hoping they don’t get scratched or knocked in the water…
But Hobie has solved that problem with their protective case with clip. Well done.
Finally, go try on a pair of Hobie polarized sunglasses and see if they fit your face (and stay on your face/head) as well as they did ours.
