Want to start tying your own flies?
Today we’ve got Insider member and former Orvis Instructor, Joe Sherer, giving us a tour of his fly tying room.
He’s been tying flies for many years and has a range of tools and materials from $20 vices to $200 vices, but today he’s going to share with you what you need (and what you don’t need) to get started with tying your own flies.
You’ll learn:
- which tools you need to start tying your flies, and about how much they cost
- what materials you need to get started, and where to get them (hint: fly tying shops are not the best place to get materials)
- how to save money on your fly tying journey
- and much more

Here are the necessary tools to get started when tying flies:
- Vice
- Bobbin
- Bodkin
- Whip finish tool
- Tweezers
- Scissors
In addition to the tools above, you’ll also need the materials to make your flies.
Obviously you’ll need hooks, but your flies could be made of a variety of other materials, including hair, feathers, and even fake fingernails.
Now, where should you get these materials?
The obvious place to go would be a fly fishing shop, but if you want to get creative and save some money, you can get materials from Hobby Lobby, beauty shops, and other craft stores.
Joe has probably saved hundreds of dollars by going to stores other than fly fishing shops to get his materials.
Conclusion
If you’re just getting started in fly tying, you’ll need the 6 tools listed above, as well as some materials to make your flies.
You’ll probably be able to get everything you need for $50-100.
Big thanks to Joe Sherer for helping us get started tying flies!

I am a winter Texan and back home in Colorado un il next December. Have been fly fishing for years. This past winter was to be my first attempt to fly fish the Texas coast. Attempted to use all the tips and classes from Salt Strong but was unable to put anything in my net. Therefore in my off season in Colorado (will be fishing here) my goal is to read, watch, and question all info you have and I am able to find on the subject. Thanks for the article you have on line.
Wow!!! That was terrific! Thank you for sharing! I use nail polish on flies and jigs but had no idea about the dumbbell eyes and a bunch of other stuff!!! Super tips!!!
