Testing A New Lure While Finding Spots With Oyster Locator Tool

I had the chance to test out a new lure while finding spots with our oyster locator tool!
Mike Teahan, who is one of our very own Salt Strong Insider Members, actually makes his own lures by hand and he has been catching a ton of nice fish with them on the Atlantic coast.
So I had to hit the water with him to see them in action.
Take a look at the full report here!!

- Slot Machine Custom Rod

- Daiwa J-Braid x8 Grand 10lb
- Ande Monofilament Leader 20lb and 30lb tippet section
On-The-Water Action
I managed to hook into a solid trout at spot #1 using the new lure from Mike.
Of course, we hooked into a few ladyfish as well before making our way over to spot #2.
For the first half of this trip, I worked this plug like a walk-the-dog topwater lure and it just barely went under the surface.
We caught a few snook at spot #2 thanks to some help from Smart Fishing Spots.
If you haven’t already heard of Smart Fishing Spots, it is our all-in-one platform designed to show you fishing hotspots in your area while also displaying the tides, winds, and other important information for planning trips.
Most of the spots we fished on this day were in areas both of us had never fished before.
So we used the oyster locator tool to unlock underwater vision to pinpoint the exact location of oyster clusters.
Oyster bars provide instant fishing spots that will likely hold feeding fish.
If you can find a mix of oysters, mangroves, and seagrass then you’re in the right type of spot!
As the sun came up a bit higher, I noticed more bites were coming a bit deeper into the water.
So I sped up my retrieve to dive the lure deeper and sure enough more strikes followed.
Just when we got to the last spot for the day, my GoPro battery died.
Mike happened to hook into the best fish of the day – a solid trout that I did get a picture of on my phone.
It was so cool to use a handmade lure and test that out in completely new waters.
This trip greatly emphasizes the importance of spot selection.
Usually on clear days with the sun up in the sky, the topwater bite is not the best lure to lean on for strikes.
However, this lure got great results due to spot selection.
Smart Fishing Spots
It was all about finding oyster bars which are just a click away within the Smart Fishing Spots platform.
For you Insider Members, you have instant access to this software with your club membership.
I use the platform myself for pre-trip planning as well as on-the-water adjustments if conditions change.
This software uses three different map layers and features a button to instantly show oyster bars and seagrass in any area.
If you are not yet an Insider Member, I highly recommend giving the club a try.
Not only will you gain full access to Smart Fishing Spots, but we also have Smart Fishing Tides which includes tide charts as well as feeding projections for the entire day.
It predicts the best days and times to hit the water and find feeding fish.
Another piece of your membership is huge savings on all of the tackle and gear in the Fish Strong Tackle Shop.
Tackle & Gear Used On This Trip
I used the Custom Slot Machine Rod on this trip which has been by far the best-performing inshore rod I’ve ever used.
It is a Medium Power 7’6 rod meant for all-purpose inshore saltwater fishing.
I paired that up with a Daiwa BG MQ 2500 spooled with 10lb braid tipped with 20lb monofilament leader.
The last 8 inches or so of the leader was 30lb monofilament to strengthen the very end of my line.
Insider Members get an instant $100 OFF the Slot Machine rod with their membership (that basically pays for the club!).
For Insider Members as well, we are offering free line and we’ll spool it up for you beforehand on all saltwater reels so you can hit the water immediately.
Not only that, we’ll also ship it to you free of charge.
Simply add a reel to your cart and follow the steps from there and we’ll have your reel ready for action!!
Please let me know if you have any questions about finding spots with our oyster locator tool down in the comments section!!

Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Martin! I’ll be chatting with Mike next week and I’m curious to see what he’d like to do.
Love to see a little more about the lure and how it was made. Paint, hardware etc. Started playing with making lures myself
Great idea!
Great video and looks to be a great lure. Just curious as to what time of day did Mike catch his big trout?
Thanks Charley! Mike’s big trout was caught around 10:30 in the morning.
I would be very interested in a lure that can cover a couple fishing depths like that!
Great video!
Glad to see that you enjoyed this video!
Great video. Are the lures going to be available or are they going to stay one-off privately produced? Always like another good lure.
Thanks Vance! We’ll certainly try to find a manufacturer for producing this lure.
Another great video. I was thinking it would be cool if the Smart Spots app allowed you to pinpoint coordinates for things like “Oysters” that could either be downloaded and transferred to a chart plotter, or simply keyed into a chart plotter. I use the smart spots app all the time and largely visually navigate to spots based on the satellite maps. The app isn’t great at the navigation part. So being able to extract the coordinates of a spot either via download or with a pen and paper would be a useful feature.
My 2 cents.
That’s already possible. There are actually a couple ways to export spots from this SFS platform that can get uploaded into a gps. Here’s the way I do it: https://saltstrongdev.wpengine.com/articles/export-routes-from-smart-fishing-spots/
Thanks Luke!
Awesome video! The lure looks like a fatter version of a Boone Castana lute I’ve been using for over 30 years with great success to this day.
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment!
Thanks Luke for the information. Lure is interesting, always interested in new lures
Thanks for making time to post the nice comment Bill!

Thanks Michael!
