We pulled up a few solid red snapper and got those on ice.
What we ran into next completely blew us away.
It was honestly so unexpected we were shaking as we saw what was on the end of our lines.
MONSTER MANGROVE SNAPPER!!!
I filled up my cooler by the end of this trip and headed home with dinner in the box!
This was an unforgettable trip – thanks to Nate and Jack for joining me out there!!
Most of the strikes came right on the bottom.
It is easier to get these big fish up to the surface if you fish a little higher up in the column.
When fishing down near the bottom the fish have the chance to swim back to structure and break you off.

Hey Matt,
We got a pontoon boat , 2016 18′ with a 60hp 4 stroke outboard , and whenit comes to near shore reef:
1. How far from shore are they near the clearwater/st pete area?
2. Its safe to for a pontoon this size to ravel to such reef when they are locatedinopen sea waters?
3. On your recent videowith Nate from southern salt, and you mentioned the cigar minnows for bait, can you elaborate more on that type of bait, and in your opinion which one is the best bait for near shore reef fishing for red snapper ?
Hey Jose! I’m not sure if the distance in the St Pete area but Luke has extensive experience for that area.
The reason kayaks are going to the reefs in my videos you see if bc the reefs are about 1-2 miles of the beach. In other areas it can be much further.
Navigating a pontoon boat to a nearshore red can be possible but conditions have to be exactly right. You will been a super calm day as pontoons historically don’t do well in chop and rough sea.
I used cigar minnows, Bonita straps, and you can even use squid. I found my best action on cigar minnows but I know Bonita can work really well too!
Good questions!
Awesome video!! I’m new to the area fish mainly inshore but wanting to go offshore in my Hobie.
Thanks David! We had a blast! I’m sure a member would go with you!
Them mangroe’s are my favorites to eat …you any good at cooking them ?
I know a little sum’m. They were amazing, grilled on the half shell.
💪
Very exciting video showing the monster mangrove snapper you are catching on near inshore reef. I would like to have seen more about tactics, type of bait, rig, weight, chumming, electronics to get and stay on reef, how you store fish in the kayak, did you motor to reef or pedal/paddle, do you carry personal EBIRB,, ETC
Thank you,
Ed

Used my Daiwa BG3000, purchased from Salt Strong, for the first time today. Very, very smooth. Love it. Casts really clean. My first Daiwa reel. I do have one of their rods. I have quite a number of other brands of spinning reels to compare it to and its looking like a winner. Next model will be a Daiwa with higher gear ratio.
Hey James! Glad you’re happy!
That’s a solid bet! I’m a big fan of the BG MQ! 🔥
