What are the best tactics for catching mullet with a cast net?
Live mullet is one of the best baits for reeling in redfish, seatrout, snook, or flounder all year round.

The net I use to catch mullet is a 6-foot cast net with a 1/4-inch diameter mesh.
To start, slowly creep your vessel into the shallows using the current or wind to drift toward the bait.
That prevents you from having to constantly adjust the trolling motor.
If you don’t have wind or current to assist you, you can use your trolling motor to get up to speed and shut it down once you feel close enough to drift toward the bait.
Throw the net out once you’re close to the bait and let it sink down to the bottom.
Then, pull the net in swiftly so it closes around the mullet.
Another helpful tip is to have a bucket of water right next to you to dump the mullet into once you bring the net in.
Then you can transfer them over to your live well without getting your vessel all dirty.

I always find myself chasing after them in the kayak and not getting any!

Netting bait fish is an art of it’s own,but you can be good at it with practice and even change the technique to help you better which you will discover on your own.the big plus is money saving.thank you salt strong for the education and tips,it’s going to be useful for sure.mike j

I see your using a 6′ net
I haven’t fish salt water with live bait. However, I’m considering buy a net. Would it beneficial to have an 8′ in lieu of the 6′ ? What are pros and cons ?
Start with a 6. Practice on your front lawn.
You’re welcome Mike! I’ve always used a 6ft net since it’s easier to manage, but a larger net will cover a larger area which can result in better odds of catching bait. I would start small and work up to a larger net if needed.

Just gotta practice! Good thing about throwing a net is you don’t have to be on the water. Can practice just about anywhere you have space.
Good info Tony RE the running full throttle then shutting off the motor. I would like to see a tutorial on how to find the bait fish; time of day, best locations (shoreline, in shore, under bridges), tide point, etc. I sometimes spend hours trying to find the bait with no luck. I like to use live bait if I have guests on the boat since they are almost guaranteed some fish with live bait.

Yea this maybe true buy right now at least where I fish its acmo go because the majority of the mullet that were here during the fall run are now gone but maybe in your area of central fl or south Florida they are still prevalent but here in northeast fl they are gone until spring and besides for me I never fish with bait anyways to much stink and hassel to keep alive and when I was shown how to use a cast net many years ago when I first started fishing inshore I found out it wasn’t for me and takes lots of practice to perfect besides I bought a new lure from zman called the mullitron lx it’d an inline spitting image mullet imitation either 4.4 inches or 6 inches made out of there tough tpe plastic had a rattle and is been voted best soft plastic bait imitator in icast 2023 so if I really need a spitting image exact replica I can use this no thanks for live bait I like to keep my boat clean and stinky free but thanks for the info and all you do
