Two people…
Same boat…
Same lure…
You might expect them to catch the same number of fish, right?
Well, in this video I was outfishing Joe (who said we weren’t counting) by a pretty good bit.
All I was doing was one simple thing differently than he was, and in this video, I’ll show you what that was.
Enjoy!

When most people aren’t catching fish, they want to switch to a new lure.
What I’ve found really effective (and time-saving) is instead of switching lures, just switch how you’re retrieving your lure.
On this trip, Joe was giving his lure a pop.
He wasn’t catching many fish because a cold front had recently come through, the current was slow, and the fish were lethargic.
I was outfishing him because instead of giving my lure a pop, I was letting it sink down to the bottom where the fish were hanging.
Because they were lethargic, less action on the lure helped me catch more fish.
Conclusion
If you’re not catching fish, instead of switching your lure, try switching up how you retrieve it.
You can change speeds, add an extra twitch, or let it just sink to the bottom more, depending on if the fish are aggressive or lethargic.

I just bought them and they haven’t arrived yet, but what hook do you use for them? I have 3/0s and 7/0s along with a lot of smaller ones. What do you recommend?
I recommend the Hoss Helix hooks for using paddletails in shallow water.
Anything I can do to avoid puffers? I’m in the Indian River area fishing the flats and it seems like every other cast if my retrieve is slightly slower puffers bite soft plastics in half.
There unfortunately isn’t much you can do when fishing areas with a lot of puffers. That’s when I’ll switch over to a weedless spoon or a hard plug if I want to stay in the area. Otherwise, I’ll move to a different spot.
C’mon, Joe…..you haven’t been paying enough attention to Luke’s training sessions.
Haha!
