Are the original Berkley Gulp baits back?
Here’s the deal…
The past couple of months I’ve noticed that many of the new Berkley Gulp baits are feeling different… they are tougher and more durable than what I’ve been used to the last couple of years (since Berkley made the big mistake of changing up their formula).
It’s almost like the old school “Original” Gulp baits that we all loved are back…
What’s weird is that Berkley hasn’t made an announcement on this.
It’s almost as if they heard how much anglers were upset about the last Gulp material formula change, and they’ve been trying to get rid of all the inventory of the existing Gulp baits that are soft and weak while slowly bringing the original baits back before they make an official announcement… that’s at least just a guess.
Either way, I’m definitely seeing some better quality Gulp baits back in stores, so I put together this quick video to show you how to tell the difference in the good packs vs. the bad ones.
Enjoy and definitely leave me a comment below if you are seeing the same thing in your area.

do the gulp saltwater baits work on bass?
Absolutely!
If you get a package of soft crappy GULP, take them out of the package and let them dry out. Once they get hard, put them in tub of gulp juice. Once they re-hydrate, they will be much tougher, although a little smaller. But you should be able to get a lot more fish out of them.
Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment!
I just bought the container of shrimp and they are so soft that some of them fly completely off the jog head when I cast it. Nuts.
Hi I have a little tip that I could share. Since Berkeley started making the softer gulp shrimp I switched to gotcha shrimp. I lay the lore on a table and Pierce it on the top bottom and both sides with a fork. I then place these shrimp in the Gul P shrimp liquid. I then fish them under a popping cork just like I would the original gulp shrimp. They last about 10 times longer then the Gulp shrimp would. I use this method on all the rubber Bates that I use now.
Thanks for the info…. Also how long should a pack of gulp last in the pack? I have some old packs I found I have had for a year or so. Thanks
Luke – Hate to change the subject, but have you tried the Power Pro Super 8 braid ? If so , what do you think versus Power Pro?
Anybody know if the freshwater gulp are the same “flavor” as the saltwater gulp?
Just curious, they smell the same….
thanks for the heads up. I use a lot of Gulp.
Your right about the weak gulps – went through a pack in no time – just a few hits and lost bait. Found old pack in tackle box ( way to many lures) and could tell the differance. Thanks for the info!!!

I stopped using Gulp bait because they kept just being nibbled off the hook. I will look for the old ones. Worth a try.
