Snook & Tarpon In Hidden Lakes: Fun Backcountry Adventure

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring untouched fishing spots where few anglers can get to, you’re going to love this. My dad and I geared up with our motorized paddle vessels—me on the L2Fish paddleboard and him on his Hobie kayak equipped with a brand-new Bixpy motor—and set out deep into the mangroves.
We were on a mission to reach a hidden lake we hadn’t visited in over four years. The journey wasn’t easy—red tide in the area and a maze of narrow backwater creeks kept us guessing—but it was worth every second.
Along the way, we tested out some of my favorite lures, including the Mulligan Bomber and Flea Flicker, and hooked into some solid fish like trout, snook, and even spotted some tarpon rolling around!
This is the kind of fishing experience that makes you forget about the world for a while.

Hey Luke neat fishing trip. How would you find those types of hidden lakes/bays? Do you use smart fishing spots app with contour lines?
Thanks David! Yes, I use Smart Fishing Spots to find them… mostly the satellite imagery layers, but the 1 ft contour layers is super helpful for finding the ones with deeper water which usually have the higher odds of having bigger fish.
Hey Luke. I’ve discovered a few local YouTubers fishing for tarpon in hidden salt water lakes and would definitely enjoy seeing more Salt Strong videos demonstrating how to find and fish these lakes.

The process for finding them is easy… just use the satellite imagery layers in Smart Fishing Spots to find hidden lakes that are connected to a bay, river, etc. Not all of them will hold fish, but they all are fun to explore given the adventure aspect of this type of fishing… going where few others (if any) have ever been.
