In the fall, bait tends to run larger and fish feed heavily on an almost unlimited supply of food. That means it’s time for us to step up to larger lures to match the hatch, and the 5″ Mulligan Bomber is an outstanding choice.
In this video, I’ll show you three ways you can retrieve our #1 large paddletail and take advantage of some of the best fishing of the year!
Have any questions or want to share some of your retrieval tips? Leave a comment down below—I’d love to hear from you!

Essential Gear
These two combos are perfect for inshore fishing:
➡️ Most Popular Combo: TFO Pro/Daiwa Fuego LT 2500D-XH
➡️ Premium Combo: Slot Machine Custom/Daiwa BG MQ 2500
Key Takeaways
- Straight retrieve: simply reel the lure back in slowly enough to bump the bottom but quick enough to keep the tail flapping.
- Twitch: from the wrist, twitch your rod tip up quickly to make the lure jump off the bottom and let it fall back down. Try varying speeds until the fish respond.
- Buzz the surface: Using little or no weight, run the lure across the surface so the tail buzzes and gurgles across it.

Thanks Pat, Great video. Never considered the 3rd retrieve. Gonna try it next time on the water.
Thank for the video
Thank you for this video! I’m able to consistently locate fish but I’m struggling on catching anything on artificials even with very light tackle. I suspect my retrieve is the issue but I didn’t know what I was doing wrong until I saw your video. You’ve given me some great tips for my next time on the water.
Glad this cleared some things up for you. One of the biggest mistakes I see for anglers that are new to artificial lures, is not keeping the lure close to the bottom. Most of your bites will come lower in the water column.
Thank you Pat, I needed that lesson, wasn’t sure about my retrievel,I will have more confidence now .Thanks again
Glad you liked it Darren!
Hi Pat, if you want a lure that does your #2 method of imitating a dying fish, try the Slick Lure with an Owner Beast #4 hook. I can throw it farther than any other lure and it’s completely weedless. Cool Beans and Tiger Bait colors have worked well for me. It is worth trying if you’re not familiar with it. Work it just like your #2 method in the video. It is a lot of fun when you feel the thump with the slot machine, then set the hook with authority!
I’ve been meaning to try those. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks Pat as always appreciate it
No problem Philip!
For buzzing the surface, try rigging the soft plastic upside down… it will create much more surface noise.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll be sure and give that a shot!
Well pat because of this evil storm thats going to hit our state on wend through thurs i doubt that the fall mullet run will still be going on at least not in my area of northeast fl jacksonville besides I won’t be going fishing again for probably another possible 2 weeks because I have some training coming up starting on the 14th of Oct to the 22nd of Nov its for a job that i am looking forward in doing but even with the training I will still be able to fish the weekends but im sure by then most of the baitfish will have left jax and headed out to sea until the spring run anyways just saying who knows I could be wrong and the bait might still be here I will just have to see but thanks for the info anyway and all you do
Hopefully it’s still around. It’s starting to thin out down by us.
This is a really good one Pat. Definitely going to give these tactics a try
Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for the helpful pointers Pat! Stay safe in the storm and we’ll be back on the water soon enough.
We are all good, hope you made it through unscathed.
