Daiwa Coastal TW 80 H Baitcasting Reel Review

Is the Daiwa Coastal TW 80 H baitcasting reel just another freshwater reel with a paint job?
I’ve been using it for the past several months on a variety of inshore species to see how well it handles the saltwater environment.
In the video review below, I’ll share what I discovered about the reel’s construction as well as the performance I experienced on the water.
Enjoy!

Conclusion
The way I use this reel, I’m typically fishing for slot-size fish. I’m fishing with smaller artificial lures, say a 3 1/2-inch paddle tail or 3 1/2-inch shrimp imitation on a 1/8-oz weigh or something along those lines.
I still need my accuracy. I still need my distance, and the Daiwa Coastal TW 80 H baitcasting reel really fits the bill. It does a really good job for those inshore species, though I have caught some over-slot fish with it even though it’s not specifically designed for that.
If you’re an angler that likes your artificial lures and slot size fish, this can be a good fit for a quality baitcasting option. It’s well-designed for those lighter lures and slot-size fish.
However, if you are an angler that likes to use larger baits, you’re specifically going after larger fish, or you’re fishing around heavy structure, this might not be the reel for you. You may want to go up to the Coastal 150 size instead. The same goes for someone who’s fishing a lot of live baits and natural baits that are going after those larger fish will want to step up in size as well.

I always thought this on a medium action rod would be great for winter trout
What size braid are you using on this reel?
I recommend 15-20 for most anglers however I personally use 10.
Great review, thanks Pat!
Thanks JD!!
Nice review! This sounds like the go-to reel for me , if & when I add bait casters to my arsenal! Sounds like I’m creeping up towards the 8 rods in the back of my yak! (Dang you, Matt! & Pat! 🤣)
I think it was already asked, but what casting rod specs would you consider for this reel (used in the way you described). I asked this, not knowing anything about the bait caster world!
I have two, a Cajun Alted 872 and a Cashion Salt Finesse. The Cajun is for 2.0’s and Prawn Jrs on 1/8 oz Helix Hooks and the Cashion is for Ned Rigs

Both great rods. The Cajun is really close to the performance of the Slot Machine and the Cashion will throw 1/10 oz Ned Rigs pretty far.
Thank You Pat for this great analysis. I personally like my bait casting reels to have a line minding system that also engaged when in free spool.
Thanks for watching Ronald! Appreciate it!
Thanks for such a detailed breakdown of this reel Pat !! MOST fish are slot to underslot & the 80, being a true Saltwater reel, is an excellent choice. Anyone who is a trophy fish chaser would surely benefit using the 150.
Yes sir!
Just curious. What rod do you have paired with this reel? (Name, model, power, lure rating?)

What size braid are you using on the 80 and 150 size baitcasters. Thanks
I don’t use anything over 20 anymore, so the 150 gets that. On the 80 I run 10 pound but I don’t recommend that for anyone that isn’t very familiar with casting set ups, it’s expert level and tricky to use. Stick with 15 or 20 on the 80 also and you’ll be happy.
Thanks for the review. I’ve been looking for a saltwater baitcasting reel and this one just may be it.
It’s a good one!
I’ve had these reels for years, I’ve wade fished with these reels and caught big fish on these reels. They are hardy and I oil them up after every 5th trip. Hose them down with a hose and go.
These definitely have been solid performers! Glad they make them in this size now!
