Pro Tips For Bridge Fishing From A Kayak

I just visited the Florida Keys down south and there are a TON of bridges connecting the small islands and over rivers that provide excellent opportunities at big fish.
You’ve just got to know where to start.
Anything from trophy mangrove snapper to tarpon to grouper are near these bridges.
These tactics will apply to bridge fishing from a kayak just about anywhere with some minor tweaks.
Before heading out to a bridge, know the current and know your skillset.
You do not want to get caught in a bad current and lose control of your vessel.
Look at the first third or the bottom third of the tide cycle first.
The middle of the tide will be the strongest point.
As far as bait goes, all you need is a few dozen frozen shrimp.
A size #1 or 1/0 bait hook will do the trick here.
You also will want to pick up some split-shot weights for this rig.
The minimalist approach is best for this type of fishing.
After you get yourself in position, cut the shrimp up into small little pieces.
We’re going to use this as chum to get the fish into feeding mode.
Take a handful of chummed shrimp and throw that out where you plan to cast.
Another overlooked spot when the bridges don’t work out is along the causeways leading into bridges.
There are mangroves, potholes, and other structure along the way fish will sit in.
Skipping lures beneath mangroves is one of my favorite ways to get bites next to causeways.

Timely post! I have a new/used fishing kayak. Have not made a road trip to the Keys in 30+ years when I was a SCUBA diver. Now you have me excited to make the trip again!

I think I’ll use a fishing Boat like a 28.5 ft Mako Sport Fishermen instead of a Kayak first. I’m not experienced and second I like the feel of a boat more then a Kayak. The main reason is that I have more weight to lose before I can get into a Kayak. Down 41 Lbs so far mostly Juicing. Still have a lot to go Is there a weight that’s suitable for Kayak’s?
Boats definitely have more range than kayaks! It’s hard to say what the mark is when it comes to weight because of the different types of kayaks out there and the ability of each person but I know of people that are over 300 pounds that fish out if kayaks
