The Impact Of The Early Morning Shadow Effect On Shallow Flats

The early morning shadow effect on shallow flats can cause more damage than you think.

Most anglers don’t even think about this.

Then they wonder why they aren’t catching any good fish when in good areas during low sun hours.

In the early morning hours, the sun is low and slowly rising.

If the sun is behind you and you’re fishing a mangrove shoreline or similar structure, then you’re going to cast a shadow.

Any fish that sees your shadow will get spooked and likely leave the area.

It alerts them that something bigger than them is in the area.

When you’re fishing shallow water in the early hours of the morning or shortly before the sun sets, be sure very mindful of where your shadow is going across the water.

This is a common error and many often wonder why they aren’t catching more fish.

Be sure to cast in front of your shadow while the fish are still there!

Good tip. Also applies to boat T-tops, towers, and poling platforms.

I noticed long ago a low-flying aircraft or a boat’s silhouette in deeper water do the same while fishing patch reefs in 100 feet of water.

Good advice, I’m sure that is true on the open flats too. I’m going to cast toward the sun or ahead of the boat in the early morning.

Great reminder Luke! It’s amazing how long your shadow can be in the early hours.
