I’d like to see soft baits that are more acceptable to using scents to adhere or hollow to inject the scent into the soft bait. Some soft baits have a slot in them that I fill up, that’s a good start.
Good discussion, a couple points converged in my wretchedly excessive mind. Gas…Bad. Outboard exhaust…thru the the prop. When fishing smaller creeks and drains on a incoming tide I guess I should shut down the outboard and go to the trolling motor sooner than later, well before leaving the main channel. Am I over thinking this?
I have been using scent for years because I know it works and since you guys came out with your dr juice slammer scent I mix it with my favorite procure it seems to make it last longer I have found scent works best for both reds and flounder that I pursue because both species especially reds use there sence of smell when hunting there prey trout to but not as much as they rely more on there sight then smell but I always add scent to all my lures except when using gulp baits because they have there own scent and adding more is not needed and the scent just runs off gulp baits but even with gulp baits I always tip my paddletails or swimming mullet with a small piece of fishbites I use both fishbites and infused procure with Dr juice slam scent and I believe it really does make a difference especially in the primarily murky water I fish here in northeast fl jacksonville st augustine area in this kind of water both flash and scent can be the difference in catching a few or really getting on a great bite any lure I use has either gold or chartruese or both in them combined with scent and you can’t go wrong thanks for the info and all you do👍😉
One thing I love about Zman’s ElaZtech baits is its ability to actually absorb scent. If you use them try soaking a few of them the night /day before you go out. They’ll be fire 🔥

What’s your opinion on using menhaden oil for chumming since the Berkley scientist say fish can’t smell oil because it balls up in water and doesn’t disperse? I’m a freshwater angler and have never used it but I’d like to test it with a cotton ball or sponge soaked in it and used for catfish since they have an incredible sense of smell. Berkley says your throwing your money away with oil based scents.
They also have a bias to say that since all of their scents are water-based… And all of the pure oil-based scent manufacturers say that water-based scent is a waste. I haven’t seen proof of either statement and my personal experience is that they both work.
Looking for a quick scent spray …. dilute a $5 jar of Power Bait in a blender with 8 to 10 oz of water. Mix till no chunks visible. Fine strain the liquid into a sprayer. Don’t use the stuff with glitter and what ever you do … don’t tell the wife you used her blender.
All the scents I’ve looked into have Surfactants that emulsify the oil into a water or a gel base.
I use fish oil liquid sold in pet stores, and a Phosphatide (Lecithin) powder as an emulsifier. It’s a soy based vitamin supplement. Lecithin is used in the food industry to emulsify. It’s shelf available and cheap. I’ve played with a lot of different fish oils. And the results are always the same.
I use it from a spray bottle. I don’t like gels, to messy. But you can add tiny amounts of Thick It or Thick n’ Easy if you want a gel. (expensive stuff) You can also add any scents to it that you like, garlic, etc.. Freshwater trout like the strawberry I make. (no regular food flavoring .. it has an ethanol process … natural flavor only)
One Con. I don’t add any preservatives like the pre-made have. Like house guests and garbage, it goes bad in about a week or two after the water is added. The base emulsion keeps for a long time. Add water to a stored base as needed.
Is it better than buying pre-made? Can’t say. I use it and it has worked for me. I can say, I use it without worrying how much I’m using because it’s cheap to make.

Good info guys and one of my favorite topics in fishing is about scents or attractants. I’ve also been noticing another product that’s been pretty popular in the market lately that’s called “Bait Fuel”. It’s a fish attractant that’s gel water based that has no smell but has the same properties as Dr. Juice products. They claim that oils is not a good way of mixing with fish attractants due to that fish don’t smell oils and doesn’t mix well in water. I’d like to see you guys do some kind of experiment using that product as well. I’m not knocking on Dr. J or Pro Cure products cause they work for me as well, but I bought one and I’m pretty impressed on the results so far.
Great info you presented! I like the discussions on current research – lots of interesting stuff out there but sometimes the average angler who isn’t a fisheries biologist never hears about it. The Salt Strong community you two created is fantastic for the fact it provides such a vast amount of useful information with all the research, observations, and experience in one setting. Scent being one example. I never put much stock in it (although Gulp was always in my tackle kit) but now I use Dr Juice and Pro Cure on all my artificial baits and have definitely seen a big difference. Many thanks! Also while I’m at it – love my Slot Machine – it has become my favorite rod!
Really gets you thinking about the different things that scent your hands. I thought I’ll gas the boat at the end of the trip, then I thought will the soap I wash my hands with be a deterrent. Certainly won’t be worrying about removing Dr.J or gulp juice from my hands. TY very informative.
