Unfortunately for Tony, his Moonwalker topwater lure was snapped off by a big hungry snook early in the morning on this trip.
After finding a perfect cove off a point right underneath some mangroves where big snook like to sit, sure enough, that big snook was there waiting to strike.
Even when using a 30-lb leader, this fish snapped the line in a matter of seconds.
After losing the Moonwalker and the snook, Tony decided to tie on an additional 40-lb leader to beef up the tip.
This is referred to as the Dirty Deeks Leader Assembly.
Tying an additional, stronger leader to the end of your existing line will assist in abrasion resistance and help strengthen your leader if you do hook into a nice fish.
Occasionally, we as anglers forget to set our drag before we launch out our first cast.
Then once we hook into a fish, the drag can be too loose or too tight which only plays against you.
Be sure not to have your drag too loose or too tight because once you go to fight that fish, you may either snap the line or the fish can take off running and spit the hook because the line is loose.
Conclusion
The moral of the story: set your drag before you make your first cast!!
Having a loose or locked down drag can lead to pulled hooks and snapped fishing lines.
As eager as you might be to get a line in the water, make sure everything is all set to go before you risk losing gear to hungry fish!!

Really love All-Star rods
Definitely great for the price!
What size hooks are those?
Hey Scott! They are a custom 1/0 hook that comes with the lure.
What size hooks on the moon walker ?
Hey Ronnie! They are a custom 1/0 hook
I think someone is still having nightmares about losing that big snook! 😆
A little bit haha
Interesting to me that you use a larger leader than main line. My philosophy has always been to have the leader be the least strong section of the reel to terminal tackle. But, I also fish a lot of live shrimp under popping corks so the idea is to only lose a hook rather than the proverbial hook, line and sinker. 50lb power pro to 20lb flourocarbon leader usually accomplishes the mission! I beef up the leader to 30lb when I target Tripletail, which can often reach 20 lbs in this area.
We’ve done tests with 10lb braid and it has a breaking strength closer to 20lbs. The thinner 10lb line helps tremedously with casting distance and accuracy. The heavier leader is supposed to help with abrasion resistance, especially in situations like this with snook.
Tony, you offered a lure, and then a fish took it.
How did the snook steal your bait?
In my eyes, she got the moonwalker fair and square.
Single barbless hooks, she probably didn’t have the lure for too long.
There’s a good chance the lure would have popped up close by within a short time.
Wasn’t hers for the taking! Haha, but thats the risk I suppose!
Tony I saw you were using the Allstar rod. I can’t seem to find it on Academy’s website. Do you know if they still make this?
Yes they still carry them. They are a slightly different color now.
