When you’re using artificial lures it’s best not to use a circle hook.
Our instinct is to set the hook when we’re retrieving a lure.
But you never want to set the hook on a circle hook because you’ll pull the hook out of the fish’s mouth.
If you’re letting a lure sit on the bottom waiting for a fish to pick it up, these work great!
I mainly use circle hook jig heads with live bait or cut bait.
You never want to use a j-hook with live or cut bait because you may gut hook a fish.
A circle hook goes right to the corner of a fish’s mouth after they pick up the bait.
Also, the weight of a circle hook jig head keeps your bait in one spot on the bottom (perfect for potholes).
They can also be used for trolling with bait!

How would these work for ice fishing?
Not sure about that one as I’ve never ice fished before. I don’t see why they wouldn’t though!
Any problems with getting hung up with this rig? Especially around oyster bars? I’ve been using Luke’s weedless shrimp rig, but I do end up gut fishing a few fish. I guess due to the j hook. Thanks Tony love your videos
Hey David! You can still get hung up. Any exposed hook is likely to catch a snag. Aside from the hook getting snagged, the head of the jig itself can get wedged between oysters causing a snag as well.
Would circle hook jigs work bouncing the bottom like we do walleye fishing up north?
I wouldn’t recommend using them for “actively” fishing since there is the tendency to want to set the hook (which you don’t want to do with circle hooks).
Nice video Tony !!
Thanks Pablo!
Thanks, Tony! I didn’t know these existed either. As you mentioned, they would be good for dragging a line behind the kayak on the way back home.
You’re welcome David!
Great tips Tony!
Thanks Luke!
Those look like maybe.. Mission fishin jigheads? Before clicking the link I didn’t even know a circle hook jighead was a thing that exists. Thanks Tony!
Yep! These are from Mission Fishing. My pleasure Robert!
Please advise the company name of the Circle Head Jigs you are demonstrating. And will you be selling them in the on-line store?
Hey John!
These are made by Mission Fishing. We sell their standard jig heads but not these. If we get enough feedback and interest we can definitely look into getting them!
will these become available on SS store?
Hey Richard!
If we get enough feedback and interest we can definitely look into getting them!
GREAT TIPS. I been using a really big circle hook jig for a very long time but never thought about down sizing for reds and speckled trout. I got the big jigs back in the 80’s. It was called a “COON-POP”. I use it for tarpons; works great but with a giant twister tail soft plastic. Down to my last two out of 24. Anyone know where to find them? Thanks for all the great tips. Never too old to learn
I’ve also always used a large circle hook. But from what the salt strong group says… you don’t match your hook to the size of the fish, you match your hook to the size of the bait. I always used a 6/0 circle hook, and it looked a little odd when rigging shrimp or finger mullet/minnows. I watched a few videos of guys catching massive black drum on 2/0 hooks. I downsized myself, and started catching more fish. Even a large sheepshead would have a hard time getting a 6/0 hook in his mouth. You can get xxx strong hooks in smaller sizes if you are going after 100lb fish. Just my two cents
Thanks John!
I’m not sure where to find those jig heads you mentioned, but these are made by Mission Fishing and can be found on their site:
