Daiwa BG & Daiwa BG MQ Differences
Weight
Weight is the first difference.
The BG MQ is a full ounce lighter, which will definitely help if you’re throwing artificials all day.
Drag
Both reels have carbon fiber washers inside of the caps.
But the cap on the BG MQ is wider so heat will disperse much quicker on the BG MQ.
A substantial difference between the two reels is the max drag.
(22lb for the BG MQ versus 13.2lb for the BG)
But as an inshore angler, the drag on the BG is going to be plenty.
Gear
Although zinc is the gear material for both reels, the BG MQ’s main gear is about 20% thicker so you’ll get more power.
Waterproof Seals
Lastly, the Daiwa BG MQ has 9 internal seals while the BG does not.
Overall the extra bells and whistles you get with the BG MQ are worth the extra cost.
If you want something that is a little smoother, tougher, and will last longer, go with the Daiwa BG MQ spinning reel.

Hello, which is the best rod for an 8000 BG MQ?
Hey Rafael,
It’s not a matter of “Best” when it comes to choosing a Rod or Reel. It’s a matter of what Application you need to the Rod & Reel for.
What type of fishing are you trying to do?
What rod is recomended for these reels?
Any 7’0″ or 7’6″ Medium Power or Medium-Heavy Power Spinning Rod would be a great option for either a Daiwa BG or a BG MQ.
Owned Diawa reels since literally when they first came out! Purchased 3 Bg reels to replace the older models I had for over 10 yrs! 5 yrs now and not a problem, but, this new MQ model is a great improvement so I got one! Third cast when I used it caught a 28” snook! Little later a 31” wade fishing around a jetty! They didn’t stand a chance, ultra smooth drag when cranked down keep away from the rocks, fast line retrieve when needed when they charged straight at me! Love the Bg’s but this MQ is a step above! Thanks Justin for the information
That’s so awesome, Robert!!! Getting it done! Fish on, Bud.
I’ve had a BG MQ 2500 for about 2 months now and it’s my favorite, but I’ve never owned a BG. No regrets with my purchase.
Both are excellent options, Greg. Glad to hear the BG has been good to you!
Took my BG MQ 3000 out yesterday for its first use and it worked flawlessly. I’m very happy with my choice. As an aside, my Shimano Ci4+ decided to spin backwards on 3 hook sets yesterday. I’m sensing a little jealousy.
Glad to hear! About the BG MQ, not the Ci4+ (Ouch!).
I was really thinking seriously about the Certate. BUT decided on a Florida Fishing Products CE 1000; weighs 6.5 ounces, made in USA, carbon fiber, etc. Ordering a Bull Bay BOLT rod, this will finish the complement of spin gear to go with my fly rods. Have heard some peeps dis the FPP reels, I have two of them, have given me good service for several years. Would love to see a comparison from SS with other reels also (than just what they offer online).
I have owned an original version of a FFP reel and had some mechanical issues. The HQ sent me a self addressed stamped envelope and fixed it for me with no questions asked. The reel works perfectly now. The individual I spoke with at FFP said that their first version of their product had some defects and that their 2.0 version worked the bugs out. They took out the anti-reverse switch to eliminate a spot for water intrusion. The reels are made in Asia and shipped here.
Yeah the are made by DMK. The osprey is actually a reel that cost 50 bucks on Alibaba.com apparently. Lol.
FFA aren’t made in the USA. They are DMK made reels. DMK is a Chinese OEM. Strippers Online exposed that lie. The osprey can be had off alibaba for 50 bucks. https://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/729569-florida-fishing-products-osprey-reel/
The $100 jump would be easier with some Magseal. And jeez how much would it cost Diawa to add some extra seals in the BG? I have 2 Fuego’s and the BG and they have been great reels.
MQ BG is basically the certate minus the Japanese assembly and magseal.
^Aaron is right. It’s impossible to show the process of sealing the Anti-Reverse (it’s a threaded cap on the BG MQ and Certate, where normally it’s a “pressed” seal on other models). The physical sealing process of the BG MQ offers a greater attention to detail at that price point.
Keep in mind: The Daiwa BG has been out for several years now, and it’s definitely in line for a re-vamp (in my opinion). I bet within the next Year, Daiwa will probably step up their game again and make more improvements to the regular BG in that price range. But as it stands, the regular BG is still a great option for Inshore anglers.
I have several BGs (some of the original BGs that I still fish regularly) and BG MQs. I use the MQs when I target bluefish, false albacore, bonito and striped bass—fish that will pull drag and use the BGs for fluke (summer flounder) and spanish mackerel.
Love them both.
Good deal, Andrew! Yes both are awesome reels in their own regards.
very nicely done Justin. I’d also like to see a comparison of the BG MQ 2500 with the Shimano Stradic HGFL 2500 if possible.
Good idea, James. I’ll look into this.
In regards to the one ounce weight difference, I prefer to go with the heavier one so I can capture those gains to my arms 😂
I ended up getting the BG to pair with my Bull Bay, love it so much. It has a lot to offer over the Fuego to be within a $20 difference. Maybe one day I will upgrade to the MQ. Great video man!
Awesome to hear, Matthew!! Keep pumping those biceps, the Big Fish are starting to show up now!
