The Easy Way To Get Kids On Tons Of Trout & Ladyfish

Want a super simple way to get your kids on fish?
Trolling is a great option to find the fish easily and get bites quickly.
It’s also a fun way to explore new areas and cover a lot of ground!
In today’s episode, we take out my 9-year-old daughter, Shauna, to get her on some fish.
A cold front had just come in and it was tough to get bait so instead, we simply trolled the flats until we found the fish.
If you’ve got kids in your life that are excited about fishing (or you wish they were!), then you don’t want to miss this video.

Conclusion
We ended up having a pretty awesome day trolling and after we stopped filming, a big school of trout showed up and Shauna got to show up Dad and Uncle Luke again!
The moral of the story is, do some trolling until you find the fish.
And once you find the fish, get ready to see big smiles and excitement on all of the kid’s faces.
Bonus: trolling allows hungry kiddos to grab a snack break after they’ve tired themselves out from catching tons of fish.
Have you tried this method before with kids on board?

Watched this yesterday afternoon. Took my son out in the evening to give it a try… score!! Three trout and three ladyfish in no time at all! Channel south of where you guys filmed. Love your tips. Thank you!
Great work getting your son out on some fun fish Dave!!!
It would be very interesting to see a video using side planers while trolling for trout. It seems like the boat would scare many of the fish since you are trolling directly behind the boat.
The side planers should help get more strikes.
Are you trolling with tide or against?
I’ll most often troll with the current flow. But going against it can work too as long as it’s not a super strong current.
Ok, you got me!! Lizard fish for dinner? I hope you filmed that! You may have just found a staple for our fish tacos……….or not!! It was wonderful to see your daughter acting just like she should. Reeling in a fish, then stopping to have a snack, then reeling in more fish. What a special day for all three of you. It really is a family affair.
After filleting one side of the lizard fish, I decided against eating it because it was full of bones and the meat felt a bit mushy. So I instead put it in a crab trap which ended up catching 3 stone crabs and 1 big blue crab so it ended up resulting in some tasty treats after all:)
Yes, that trip with Shauna on the boat sure was fun!
We are planning on fishing the Destin area next weekend. My wife and daughter are really excited about trying this out.
Great news!
I have a question. This video is good and I enjoyed it. How fast are you trolling? It appears that you are moving rather briskly. I am very new at fishing. I’ve been “drifting” in freshwater lakes with my neighbor for striper and catfish. We were just moving at 0.4-0.6 mph. It certainly looks like you fellows are moving much faster than that. Thank you for the videos.
I troll anywhere from the slowest forward speed to a couple bumps of the throttle forward. The key is to keep changing it until you start getting strikes because sometimes that like it faster than others (just like how important it is to change retrieve speeds while casting lures).
Joe,
I agree kids get excited when catching their first fish. As a volunteer with the Kenneth City Police Department I started a program we call Fishing With the Cops and every 3 months we have 30 kids fishing with at least ten of the officers. We fish from 9 AM to noon while a few cops are cooking hotdogs. WE stop at noon and each kids get a couple hotgags, bottled water and health bars. I started this 3 years ago to show the kids the police are NOT their enemy and are a great bunch of men and women ( as we have 4 women cops in our town)
We have a three acre pond loaded with blue gills, sunfish, catfish and a few bass and the kids have loads of fun.

How awesome! Sure seems like a great program that you started.
I need an update on the lizard fish catch and cook lol. Those are some ugly jokers and never even once crossed my mind to try and cook them.
After filleting one side of the lizard fish, I decided against eating it because it was full of bones and the meat felt a bit mushy. So I instead put it in a crab trap which ended up catching 3 stone crabs and 1 big blue crab so it ended up resulting in some tasty treats after all:)
So awesome to take your kids fishing. I have great memories of taking my little girl fishing and she still loves it as an adult. Great job!
Enjoyed the video! One question, who gets to shine that stainless t- top after a trip on that new boat?
Stainless? It looks like coated aluminum…but I want to know how you guys were able to troll at “7000 rpm”??
🤣🤣🤣
We measure everything in English units while on live podcasts… HAHAHA
Maybe 7 mph? Seems pretty fast.
Oops… I meant to say hundred instead of thousand.
Doh!!!!
We haven’t done anything but give it a quick spray with fresh water and it’s still in good shape.
