Do you like targeting redfish with topwater lures?
Then you’re going to love this review!
I’ve been using this lure a lot recently catching redfish in the marshes and near oyster bars.
And since I featured it in the video about topwater lures for redfish vs. trout, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it.
So in this video, I’m going to give you a full review of it, including:
- Why it’s such a good topwater lure for redfish
- What’s different about this topwater lure than most other topwaters
- What I don’t like about this lure
- And some awesome on-the-water footage catching fish with it

First, we’ll start off with the specs of the Yo-Zuri 3D Inshore Pencil, then I’ll get into the pros and cons.
Specs:
- 4″ long
- 1/2 oz
- 3 ball bearings to make the rattle sound
- 2 carbon steel treble hooks
- Price: $8.99
Pros:
- The back of the lure sits low in the water (great for redfish)
- 3 smaller ball bearings make a high-pitch sound (mimics small baitfish or shrimp)
Cons:
- Doesn’t cast as far or as accurately as other spooks because the body is not as aerodynamic
- Doesn’t have great hooks (I recommend switching them out with single inline hooks)
Conclusion
Because this lure carves a relatively narrow path through the water and the back sits low, this is my go-to topwater when I’m targeting redfish.
However, since it makes a high-pitch sound and doesn’t cast that far or accurately compared to other lures, I usually use it when I know feeding redfish are in an area, not when I’m searching for fish.

how does this compare to the older yo zuri silver dog 90mm that are great for Irish saltwater Bass.
are those available on salt strong tackle site, various colors?? tks
They are not currently available in the store, but stay tuned, we will be adding many more products soon!
Thanks..depth of water you were fishing ?? what would be the shallow limits to use?? again thanks!
On average, the depth was between 1 and 2 feet. I’d say as long as the tail hook isn’t scraping the bottom, it could be used as shallow as 5 inches!
Wyatt what size single hooks would you use in front and back, would you put different sizes on front and back?
I’d go with a 2/0 for both hooks!
Spot on Wyatt!
I use the Inshore Pencils with great success within 60 minutes of first light around Cape Romain NWR and Bulls Bays.
I have far more success with the “loud” colors; in particular green and root beer colors.
I have the Owner inline hooks on all former treble equipped lures. Only way to go IMO, I don’t think I’ve noticed a decrease in hook ups since switching to all inline hooks for reds and trout.
Not sure I agree with “less distance” and “not as accurate” as the Spooks. But then it’s probably my overall casting technique and not the lure.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 3D Inshore Pencil, Bill! Just out of curiosity, which spooks do you throw?
Junior in Bone,
One Knocker in Bone, Chartreuse/Silver, Speckled Trout
Chug’N, Chartreuse/Silver (on sale on Lurenet web site), Bunker
All tend to be very productive first hour of daylight and last hour before sunset. I generally make a topwater brand/color choice based on sky conditions and water clarity.
Of course if the bite is off, nothing seems to get their attention.
We had a big series of storms blow through at dawn this morning and lasted about 3 hours. I hit the water as the last storm headed north.
Caught a couple of small reds on an EP baitfish fly and several trout on Z Man Opening Night Minnow Z. Trout were in their jumping mode but had little interest in eating my lures or flies.
No doubt I get more Red hookups with the Pencil due to design. I continue “walking the dog” through the blowup and do not immediately set the hook. I think this technique helps increase the hookup percentages.
