There are just two easy steps to cleaning blue crabs this way:
- Crack off the top of the shell
- Clean out the guts and gills (the easiest way to do this is to blast it all out with a hose)
This leaves lots of delicious meat in the corners of the body, in addition to in the claws and legs.
By cleaning crabs before boiling them, you don’t have to deal with the guts and gills on the dinner plate, which makes things much easier and appetizing.
Conclusion
Hope you enjoyed this two-step process for cleaning blue crabs!
I’ve also got a blue crab cooking video coming up soon that I can’t wait to share with you.

Can people know how to disable the crab, kill it quickly and mercifully,
before ripping off it’s shell? For instance, can they know how to target
their brain, or heart, to instantly stop it? Is this valid? Then proceed,
as you say it, then boil it, or bake it. Maybe some blood is there, and
can be drained, as well, when cleaned out, like you have it. Can you go
between the eyes, when the crab is all numbed up, on ice, in the cooler,
right away, as they are caught? They are alive, and have been making
love, to have millions of babies, and gee, they can see us, when we
either boil them alive, and or tare off their shell.
Great video , like seafood, always learning more techniques
I always chilled my crabs 1st then did it exactly the same way. I also would pull the apron off and crack the crab in half before cooking. Good video.
Great video very helpful ready to see how to cook
Very interesting and helpful. Been years since I went clamming Do you kill them before cleaning them.?
If this crab is alive how do you avoid being pinched?
I put the crabs on ice for a couple hours before doing this so that they are no longer alive/moving.
Best cooked in marinara sauce and served with the sauce over pasta better when let sit in sauce over night and eaten next day
After cleaning them can they be left in the refrigerator to cook the next day or should you freeze them?
Some people say that they have to be eaten right away, but I’ve keep them in the fridge for a day or two many times and haven’t had any issues.
Do you clean the crab alive Frozen or how?
I do not freeze them… just cool them down on ice before cleaning.
You can open the blue crab easier if you pull the key first ( under the bottom). Pull it back just like opening a beer can. Once you do that, the shell literally separates. Then pull shell apart.
Thanks for making time to leave the helpful comment Rhett!
Cleaning them is my favorite way but I dont wash the mustard and stuff out. Pull the lungs of and rinse leaving the mustard and stuff It is good to eat.
