There are two parts to this knot:

  1. Start with the figure eight
  2. Finish it with a locking half hitch

Most people get the figure eight right, but don’t finish it with the half hitch.

If a rope gets stiff from long days and nights out in the open, it can come undone without the half hitch, so that part is crucial for keeping your boat secure to the dock.

Oh my goodness – I know this video is not new but when searching “best marine cleat hitch” your site & this video appear. I’m as green as they get, but I’ve been watching my salty Father-in-Law tie off lines for years. There’s always a kiss & a hug before pulling this off. The line crosses as a figure 8 (the kiss) and then must twist & hitch to come back around & lay flatly parallel (for the hug) before pulling the line tight. The pictures on your site are spot on & I think Mr Hollywood’s final attempt is correct. However, I’d be demoted if I tried to walk away with any of his first suggestions.

Sadly, he knows not how to tie a knot. You need to wrap the line once around the base before you begin the figure eight. Also, you must cross the base on the lock. What he shows is a knot that – given time – will untie itself, just as he explained. Furthermore, under tension his knot will be difficult if not impossible to untie because he did not wrap it around the base first. This should be removed.

The hitch going the wrong way is not half as bad as a cheap cleat that will rip out of the deck

Oh my! I replayed this a few times to make sure I was seeing the locking properly. Surely you’re not doing the locking hitch incorrectly. The locking hitch MUST cross over, and have the figure 8 look when it’s finished, or it’s not truly locked. Your lock kind of runs along the side. Tsk tsk..

As pointed out already, the cleat hitch should have a wrap around the cleat at least once before the figure 8. AND if there is a singing tide or river current without it may well strip out your figure 8 or worse lock it so you can not easily untie it. Further, for boats as big as my captain’s gig (36 feet), two turns are recommended before the figure 8 to prevent seizing of the knot. Having to cut your mooring line to leave the dock once will make you remember this rule until you die. (So will watching your brother do it just not quite as embarrassing.) If you always tie it the right way, your boat stays where you put it and can easily cast off when ready. Don’t be hacking up your mooring line to leave!

Great Video Hollywood! Just wanted to touch on one point: When I was a deckhand in the USCG they always taught us to put a full turn on the cleat before starting the figure 8. The full turn helps lock down the line from slipping should you forget to finish off the figure 8s with a locking hitch. All very simple common sense things to do so that you can enjoy fishing instead of chasing your runaway boat.

Frank, since you are a guest I am not sure if you will see this, but the answer is no. The locking hitch that the Captain has applied in the video is going the wrong way. The proper way to tie this hitch is a round turn around the cleat, make the figure eight as he describes, but the locking hitch should be placed so the line of the locking hitch is aligned with and next to the line of the figure eight, as is apparent in the last photo of the blue, lime green, and white rope. As you can see in the photo of the blue rope, the over-riding part of the locking hitch covers both lines and “locks” them both down. Hopefully Salt Strong will have the Captain remake this video so it shows the correct procedure. I think most sailors and boaters would agree, based on some of the other comments.
