Red snapper season has grown men waking up like giddy little boys on Christmas, so excited to get out on the water they don’t even need coffee.

How To Use The Red Snapper Secret Weapon
Capt. Dylan likes to use bonito strips because they’re smelly and oily — red snapper can’t turn them down.
Here are some tips when fishing for red snapper:
- When you get a bite, crank the hook, don’t try to set it…remember: “Crank it, don’t yank it.”
- When you hit bottom, hold bottom. That means when the boat goes up, keep the rod tip down, and vice versa. This will help your bait not bounce on the bottom.
- If you miss the fish, get your bait back down to the bottom asap. They’ll come back for more.
- Use a double snell rig. This will increase your chances of hooking the fish.
- Occasionally take the time to straighten out your leader. This will make the bait look more natural.
Conclusion
If the snapper aren’t biting, drop down an irresistible strip of a bonito, but hang on, because the bites will be coming shortly!

This year will be my first time going for the red snapper
LIve pinfish or tomtates work great up here in the Carolinas. Too bad the season is only open 3 days this year..July 9-11th 🙁
We only get 2 days in Florida. Wish we had a 3rd day. Good Luck this year
That is only for American Reds, not the vermillions, I agree the 2 or 3 days really sux if you can’t get out. I go out of Calabash, or Murrels Inlet 3 or 4 times a year as I live near Raleigh
Try a snapper slapper lure with bait attached. They always seem to catch the bigger snapper.
is that lure enough to cast with out any additional weights?
The info is pretty solid for RED Snapper. But instead of venting the fish with by poking a hole in it’s bladder
{ which has proven to be fatal for many fish } it would be better to have bottom weighted release rig which can be purchased for about $25 & save a lot of fish.
Using frozen pre-packed octopus, or squid… is cheap and easy. It’s super stinky, and it’s arguably the toughest bait you can use. I like using a high low setup, with two 4/0 circle hooks and a 5-6oz weight. Once you hook on a piece of squid, nothing is gonna steal your bait. If you feel a tug, reel, you’ve got a fish. And a lot of the time, it two fish at once. I’ve caught fish after fish all using the same chunk of squid. Let the circle hook do it’s job, and you should have that perfect corner hook set. Live bait, is great… but overkill honestly. Snapper don’t really seem to be picky eaters to me. If your on the fish… shortly after your weight hits the bottom, they should hit. If not, move on.

Tried Bonita belly, herring, hardtail and squid. Even with 6 ounce weights remora would follow it down on the drop and strip the bait leaving only the bonita skin. I caught 1 keeper red snap but went through so much bait and remora aggravation I had to leave the whole area. The week before no remora and red snapper on almost every drop.
Nice video on the east coast space center area I use live croakers and seem to out do others in the area by getting bigger red snapper.
in our area we do not have croakers, but live bait does work well for them too… try this method with the bonita strip sometime, there’s lots of bonita in your area too right? They may work surprisingly well for you, remember to drop them to bottom SLOW

yessir, this is another great option… we have baby ocotpus whole in our shop, they make great bait for red snapper too
