Alabama has the largest artificial reef program in the United States.

The artificial reef fishery off the Alabama coast is home to snapper, grouper, amberjack and more.

Alabama also has a very strong inshore artificial reef fishery that offers great fishing for trout, sheepshead, redfish, black drum and flounder.

With so many options for reef fishing, there are almost endless possibilities of where you can fish — all you need is the GPS coordinates.

This article shows you how to use online resources from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to find the GPS coordinates for every Alabama artificial reef.

Alabama Artificial Reef Building Program

The Alabama Artificial Reef Building Program was started in 1953 when the Orange Beach Charter Boat Association asked for the authority to place 250 car bodies off Baldwin County, Alabama.

This turned out to be a huge success which created an ideal habitat for snapper, grouper, cobia and more.

Since that time, countless car bodies, culverts, bridge rubble, barges, boats, planes and other structures have been sunken off the Alabama Coast. Collectively, this created one of the most expansive collections of reefs in the entire country.

There is now a combined area of approximately 1260 square miles of reef permit zones off the Alabama coast.
