The Rapala X-Rap SubWalk is a suspending plug made for primarily for inshore fishing.
I’ve been fishing with this lure the past couple months and feel like I have gotten a good sense of how to use it.
There are some things I really like about the X-Rap SubWalk and some aspects that I do not.
In this article, I go over the pros and cons for the Rapala X-Rap SubWalk. I also show you how to use this lure in the video review at the bottom of the article.

The X-Rap SubWalk comes in two different models: the 09 and the 15.

Conclusion
The Rapala SubWalk is a solid lure choice for inshore and nearshore fishing.
It casts well and has good underwater action. I also love that it comes with single inline hooks — which I still think are the best way to keep a fish on the line.
The paint does come off after a while and they cost a little bit more than your average lure, but I have had a positive experience with the X-Rap SubWalk.

I have caught stripers,trout,crappies,pike, bass. I would say that the feather treble is what kills my glide. They need to make a hellhound in a 4 inch size. Great glider with minimum effort
Single hook hack:
Use a size or two smaller hook on the front of the lure to help prevent the hook from getting hung around the nose of the lure, or your leader.
#1, 1/0, 2/0 inline single xstrong large ring hooks will be sufficient for most inshore lures. (I like VMC)
What color is recommended for fishing the NC surf?
What size hooks do you use when you change out from treble hooks?
1/0 or 2/0 depending on the lure. I found that sometimes a #1 hook (or just a hook smaller than the rear) helps alleviate the front hook from catching around the nose of the lure, or your leader.

Thanks, Luke…..I’d just suggest including the weights of the lures you feature. When considering purchasing a new lure, I want to match its weight with that recommended for my rod.

Hey Luke, great review! What would be the conditions when you would be using this lure over a soft plastic like the jerk shad for example? Do you prefer the X-rap Subwalk over the twitching mullet? Thanks again for all these reviews and tips.
Thanks Eric! I am still pretty new to using this lure, but my confidence in using it goes up relative to soft plastic jerk shads when the water is murky since it provides more vibration in the water due to the rattles.
So far, I have only done limited testing on the twitching mullet. But this subwalk has my vote for now.
Luke that looks like 2/0 hooks .., correct??
I believe so… they simply came with the lure (one thing that I really like about these saltwater subwalks), so I didn’t put any thought into it:)
Do you know if I get the salt version how it would react in freshwater. Also the bigger 15 will probably glide a bit easier
Great review, Luke. I particularly like the split video where you can see the how the rod/rod tip action affects the bait underwater – please do more of this on future videos! I’ve been using this specific bait for about a month in the canal out back and have been doing really well with snook and even managed to land a 30″ tarpon! Of course you have to be where the fish are to do well with any bait and being a SS insider has made that much easier for me. Love this tribe….
